Cory Monteith’s Birthday: ‘Glee’ Star Would Have Been 33
Cory was born on May 11, 1982 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He started his acting career with minor roles in movies like Final Destination 3 and Deck The Halls. He switched to television, scoring a recurring role in the ABC Family show Kyle XY, and following it with guest appearances on shows like Smallville, Supernatural, and Stargate SG-1.
His big breakout came in 2009 when he was cast as quarterback Finn Hudson in the Fox hit series, Glee. In his audition video for the show, Cory sang a “cheesy ‘80s music video-style version” of REO Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” Though he was initially considered “weak” in the singing department, his passion made up for any lack of expertise. From there, Cory’s singing talents grew with his success, as the show was a critical and commercial hit! He won a Teen Choice Awards for best Actor in a Comedy in 2011, and a Screen Actors Guild Award in Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
For Cory, starring in Glee didn’t just bring professional fame and fortune – he found love as well. He and co-star Lea Michelle began dating in 2012. The two were so cute together, their love for each other undeniable, and they remained a couple up until his tragic passing.
Cory Monteith: A Life Tragically Cut Short
Sadly, on July 13, 2013, Cory was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room. His death was attributed to an accidental mix of heroin and alcohol. Cory struggled with substance addiction since high school. He had gone into treatment earlier in 2013, and spoke to Parade magazine about entering rehab when he was a teenager.
Tributes for the fallen star were plentiful. Cory was remembered both on Glee and behind the scenes. The Teen Choice Awards held a tearful good-bye to Cory and Jane Lynch also delivered a heartbreaking tribute to him during the 2013 Emmy Awards. Even when the cast filmed Glee‘s series finale, Cory wasn’t far from their minds or their hearts. Lea made sure that she would never forget Cory, taking home Finn’s jersey as the show wrapped up.
We’ll never forget you, Cory. On his birthday, let us remember the good times that came with Cory’s short but wonderful time here on earth. Leave your own Finn memories and Cory birthday wishes below, HollywoodLifers!
