Expressing your feelings about your past breakup may not be the best thing for a rekindled romance. When Cody Simpson, 18, released his new jam “New Problems,” it was as clear as day he was referencing his past split with Gigi Hadid, 20. And now it’ll be remembered as the song that ruined their romance the second time around, HollywoodLife.com has EXCLUSIVELY learned.

“Now that the song is out and getting more plays on the radio, it has brought back old memories,” a source told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “She hears it all the time and people talk to her about the song which is not fun. It’s really been a struggle for Gigi to wrap her head around and to think about.”

The insider explains that because the song was about Cody and Gigi’s relationship, something he denied initially, it was the cause of more fights.

“At first, he denied it was about her but finally came around and ‘fessed up,” our source continued. “It just leaves a bad taste in her mouth and was the catalyst of more petty problems that they didn’t clear up which led to more fights and an eventual breakup.”

Cody had trouble talking about his feelings to Gigi in person. “He couldn’t share his feelings to her normally by talking things out,” our source revealed. “He would always have to put it to songs or lyrics which she understands is his career, but she also wants a normal boyfriend who can tell her what he is feeling without having to monetize it.”

As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Cody and Gigi split up again on May 9, and it was the model’s rep that revealed the details.

“Cody and Gigi want each other to be in a place right now that allows him to only focus on his music, fans, and new message, while she can focus and continue building her career,” Gigi’s rep told E! News. “They love each other dearly and have split up in hopes that growing on their own paths will bring them together in the future. They remain friends with no hard feelings and each other’s biggest supporters.”
