Luke Spencer is ready to check out of ‘General Hospital’ for good. After 28 years of playing the beloved character, Anthony has decided to leave Port Charles behind.
After eight Daytime Emmys and 28 years on General Hospital, Anthony Geary, 67, is saying goodbye to Luke Spencer. Anthony revealed the big news in a May 8 interview. He admitted that he had grown “weary of the grind” and doesn’t “want to die” on the General Hospital set. One thing’s for sure — no one will replace Luke Spencer!
Anthony Geary Leaving ‘General Hospital’
Anthony dropped the huge bombshell to TV Insider. At 67, Anthony is ready to explore a new part of his life. Here’s his reasoning for leaving the show after more than 800 episodes:
“The people at ABC and at GH have been amazingly good to me, allowing me to live on two continents and treating me, for the most part, extremely well. This show has been a huge part of my life for over half my life and Luke Spencer is my alter ego. But I’m just weary of the grind and have been for 20 years. There was a point after my back surgery last year where it became clear to me that my time is not infinite. And I really don’t want to die, collapsing in a heap, on that GHset one day. That wouldn’t be too poetic. [Laughs] In fact, it would be poetically incorrect. I have another life and I want time to explore it.”
Anthony made the decision to leave the show in Jan. 2015. He doesn’t know how Luke will be written off General Hospital, but he revealed that there will definitely be “twists and turns” before Luke leaves town for good. There is no set date for Anthony’s last episode.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Anthony is one half of daytime’s most beloved couple — Luke and Laura (Genie Francis). The couple’s wedding is one of the most iconic moments in television history and was watched by over 30 million people in 1981. Luke and Laura have since parted ways on the show, and Luke has found love with Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot).
Luke is one of the most cherished and popular characters on daytime television. Luke and Anthony’s presence will continue to be felt long after they both leave General Hospital.
