The full statement is below:
“Errol Brown MBE passed away in The Bahamas this morning–with his wife, Ginette, and daughters, Colette and Leonie by his side–of liver cancer. Errol was a lover of life and obviously ‘music!’ I never went into his home, car or a hotel room without music playing. Errol was a ‘Gentle Man’ and was a personal friend of mine who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. His greatest legacy is that his music will live on!”
Errol fronted the band Hot Chocolate throughout the 1970’s and 80’s. The Jamaican born singer found his biggest success in 1976 with the song, “You Sexy Thing.” Originally a B-Side, the song reached number 2 in the UK and number 3 in the US pop charts. The song has appeared in such movies as Boogie Nights, Reservoir Dogs, and in a very memorable scene in 1997’s The Full Monty. Errol was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 for his contributions to music.
Errol Brown: A Life
Errol was born in Jamaica in 1943 but moved to the UK with his mother when he was twelve years old. His career in music began thanks to another English musician: John Lennon. In 1969, Error and his friends sent a reggae version of John’s “Give Peace A Chance” to the former Beatle. Initially thought as a joke, Errol received a letter a week later from John, who wanted to sign the band to Apple Records. From there, the band Hot Chocolate was formed. They released their first song, “Love Is Life” in 1970 and continued to have success over the next two decades. They are the only group in the UK to have a hit song for 15 consecutive years. The band’s hits include “So You Win Again,” “Emma” and their biggest success, “You Sexy Thing.” Hot Chocolate disbanded in 1986, with Errol going on to his solo career. He did not join the band when they reunited in 1992. In 2009, Errol retired from music, saying he had “done all [he] wanted to do.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Errol’s family, friends and fans during this time of their loss.
