On May 4, the final six contestants of Season 8 of ‘The Voice’ sang TWO songs each in hopes of winning the majority of viewer votes, and everyone truly brought their A-game. Here’s our full recap of the killer live episode!
Can you believe we’re already down to the Top 6 contestants on Season 8 of The Voice?! All four coaches are still in this thing, but after losing two singers in the April 28 episode, it was Blake Shelton who got redemption this week thanks to his last remaining artist, Meghan Linsey, who gave her best performances yet. Read our full recap to find out what went down in the episode!
‘The Voice’ Top 6 Perform: Meghan Linsey Gets Redemption For Team Blake
Kicking off the show, was Christina Aguilera‘s, 34, artist India Carney, dedicating the Oscar-winning song “Glory” by John Legend and Common to her mom. For Common’s rap part, India had to get creative and think outside the box to make it her own — and that’s exactly what she did! After almost going home last week (she was kept in thanks to America’s Instant Twitter Save in a super close vote), India totally redeemed herself and nailed her version of the inspirational song!
Next up, Adam Levine‘s, 36, only remaining contender, Joshua Davis, took the stage to sing his rendition of U2‘s “Desire,” a song choice made by his experienced coach. “I think that Josh could stand to show a little bit of flair, puff his chest out a little bit,” the Maroon 5 frontman explained. Although Josh had his breakout moment with a ballad last week, it was refreshing to see him change things up a bit and go more up-tempo.
Pharrell Williams‘, 42, team member, Koryn Hawthorne, was up next, and performed her song choice, R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” for her “role model” — mama dearest, of course! As usual, it’s impossible to believe that this girl is only 17…she killed it yet again and had her coach on his feet in awe. “It’s unbelievable the way you just let anything go to the side and let your spirit come through,” Pharrell gushed. “It just comes through you like an antenna and lights this room up. You are truly anointed. You really do deserve the term ‘inspirational singer.’ You’re the best.”
Taking the stage next was Christina’s second remaining artist, Kimberly Nichole, who dedicated her performance of “Free Fallin'” to her mom, Gloria, who she referred to as her “idol.” As she’s consistently done in past weeks, Kimberly gave an amazing rendition of the song, smiling throughout the whole track and appearing more at-ease than she has all season. That voice is just so powerful, it’s incredible! “You can sing any song!” Adam told her. Damn right.
With two artists eliminated last week, Blake Shelton, 38, is down to his final contestant, Meghan Linsey, and she definitely did him proud while singing James Taylor’s “Steamroller Blues,” the song he chose for her this week. Blake made the choice to remind viewers that Meghan is a soul singer, and her powerful performance proved just that. “You sang the crap out of it,” Blake gushed, adding, “I don’t even know what to say! It was unbelievable!” Even though Meghan has always been memorable, this week was definitely a major redemption for Team Blake as a whole!
Finishing off the first round, week-after-week fan favorite Sawyer Fredericks from Team Pharrell hit the stage with another unique performance, this time of “Shine On.” The track is one his mom used to play for him when he was young, during more difficult times, so Sawyer had more of an emotional connection to the lyrics than ever before, which helped take his performance to the next level.
Halfway done! Next, Kimberly returned to the stage to sing Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana,” a choice made by her coach Christina. “This song is all about the energy of it,” Kimberly admitted. “It’s badass and just allows me to go really wild.” The powerful singer nailed it, showing a side we haven’t fully seen from her yet. With just a few weeks left, it was definitely the right time to take a risk and finally show off her rock ‘n’ roll side, and it certainly seems like it’ll pay off for Kimberly — she left it ALL on the stage!
Joshua was back on stage next, this time sending a song out to his wife, the mother of his children. He performed The Beatles’ “In My Life,” a classic love song, and you could truly feel the emotion pouring out of him as he serenaded the love of his life. “YOU are a) a class act, honest to God. But another thing, b) that performance was absolutely mesmerizing. Every second of it – the playing, the singing, the vibe — every single thing about it was flawless,” coach Adam raved.
Following a commercial break, Koryn was back to belt out Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” showcasing her incredible vocal ability and range. Koryn truly gives it her all with every performance, completely blocking everything out and getting completely in the zone — and it’s working. This song has been done on singing competition shows countless times, but Koryn totally put her own spin on and made it her own, despite it being a bit out of her comfort zone. Unreal!
Next, India was up for her second performance, singing “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith. After her near-elimination last week, India and Coach Christina worked extra hard to make this the best it could be, and their careful consideration of every note definitely paid off! India was, not surprisingly, incredible once again, and brought the crowd to their feet. “Congratulations. That was your best performance ever on this show,” Adam told India. “I’m so impressed with, really, everything about it, but just the fact that you did something that was different for you…and it really worked.”
Remaining cool, calm and collected as always, Sawyer returned next, giving his rendition of “Take Me To The River.” Seriously, this kid never falters — never! Every single performance he gives is so different from anyone else’s on the show, which helps him stand out every time, and this week, it was no different. The crowd went nuts, and Pharrell couldn’t stop gushing over how great his little protégé performed.
Last up — Meghan, whose first performance was already groundbreaking for Team Blake, but when she hit the stage for her second go-around, singing “Amazing Grace,” she made sure the viewers would have no reason not to keep her around! Capping off a night of incredible performances, Meghan absolutely owned it, singing the whole first verse of the song a cappella. With nowhere to hide, she completely slayed it! “Did Blake just win the whole thing again?! I can’t believe it,” Christina laughed. He just might’ve!
It’s up to you to vote now, America! This week, only one contestant will be eliminated, meaning five will move on to next week’s Semifinals. Check back tomorrow to find out who went home!
