American Pharoah: 2015 Kentucky Derby Winner
The stands of Churchill Downs in Louisville were packed on May 2 for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby. In between the fancy hats and mint juleps, fans couldn’t wait for the event dubbed the “fastest two minutes in sports.”
From the get-go, Dortmund, Firing Line and American Pharoah were the three horses in the lead. It was a close race the entire time. However, in an incredible second wind, American Pharoah took the lead! His time was 2:03.02. This was only American Pharoah’s second year competing in the Kentucky Derby.
The two biggest contenders for the race were Dortmund and American Pharoah, with Pharoah being the favorite on winning the reported $2 million dollar purse.
American Pharoah’s jockey, Victor Espinoza, knows how great it feels to win the Kentucky Derby. He was on the back of last year’s winner, California Chrome, making 2015’s win his second consecutive win and his third third total Kentucky Derby victory.
