Jennifer’s connection to Selena is more than just admiration. Jennifer and Selena are the only two Latin female stars to top the Billboard 200. And the connection doesn’t stop there! Selena was responsible for launching JLo’s career, as Jennifer portrayed the late singer in the 1997 Selena biopic. Jennifer cut her first demo afterwards, which led to her debut single and a legendary music career! It all came full circle on stage at the Billboard Latin Music Awards!

Selena’s Life & History

Selena achieved Latin music superstardom in the 1980s. She first had success with the band Selena Y Los Dinos, before moving on to a successful solo career. She was known for singing Tejano music, a popular genre of Latin music originating from the American Southwest. Selena would go on to win multiple awards for her music, including the Grammy Award for Best Mexican/American Album of the Year in 1993. Highly prolific, Selena released a total of twelve albums in just eleven years. Tragically, Yolanda Saldívar murdered Selena in 1995, but her impact on music is still felt today. Twenty years after her death, fans celebrated and honored the incredible singer. Now, you can add Jennifer Lopez to that long list!
