D.L. Hughley, 52, was brought to tears in a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey when he discussed the struggles that his son, Kyle, 26, has endured throughout his life. The comedian opened up in an episode of “Where Are They Now?” about Kyle’s life living with Asperger’s syndrome.
D.L. Hughley Breaks Down Over His Son’s Battle With Asperger’s Syndrome
D.L. is one proud father. During his interview with Oprah, he became overwhelmed with emotion when discussing his son Kyle. The boy was diagnosed as a child with Asperger’s syndrome, but he has faced his challenges head-on. If you are unfamiliar with Aspergers, it’s an autism spectrum disorder that affects the ability to effectively socialize and communicate.
Of course it’s has been a tough road for the family, but D.L. admitted that Kyle has had a positive attitude over the years.
“He graduated from college, but everything has to be the same,” D.L. explained to Oprah. “He goes to work at the same time. He eats the same thing.”
Kyle Surprised His Dad & Brought Him To Tears
Then one day Kyle surprised his father by showing him how independent he could be. D.L. knows that making even the smallest change to his son’s routine would be an enormous step.
The comedian told Oprah, “Three weeks ago I had to get gas and he says, ‘Daddy, I’ll do it,’ and I’m a nervous wreck. He comes back in and he gives me the receipt and the keys and I could not stop crying.”
The Original Kings of Comedy star tearfully explained, “He did something he was afraid to do and… I just didn’t think he could do it and he did it. And I held him and I said, ‘You’re going to be alright.'”
