David Letterman is all set for his final ‘Late Show’ appearance on May 20, so he has plenty of time to slam his replacement! As Stephen Colbert gets ready to take over, a new interview reveals Dave wanted someone else for the position!
Maybe David Letterman, 68, could do a “Top 10 Insults To Your Replacement” tonight? As he prepares to end his 33 year career as a late-night host, Dave threw a little shade towards the man set to replace him: Stephen Colbert, 50. According to a new interview, Dave explained who he wanted to see take over the Late Show. It turns out, if Dave had his way, Stephen wouldn’t have gotten the job!
David Letterman Disses Stephen Colbert: A Woman Should Be ‘Late Show’ Replacement
Dave made his startling comments in an April 29 interview with Dave Itzkoff of The New York Times. The host of the Late Show reflected on what will happen after his final broadcast on May 20. Specifically, Dave discussed whom he wanted as the next host.
“I always thought Jon Stewart would have been a good choice. And then Stephen,” Dave said. “And then I thought, well, maybe this will be a good opportunity to put a black person on, and it would be a good opportunity to put a woman on. Because there are certainly a lot of very funny women that have television shows everywhere. So that would have made sense to me as well.”
Wow! Though Dave might not have meant any disrespect to The Colbert Report star, saying the guy set to take over your job wasn’t your top choice is still a big insult! We agree with Dave that there are plenty of hilarious women who are more than qualified to take over for him. But, what he said was still incredibly rude!
If Dave wanted a woman or a person of color, why did Stephen get the job? Dave explained that he wasn’t involved in process to choose his replacement! Did that exclusion bother him?
“Yeah, I guess so,” said Dave. “Just as a courtesy, maybe somebody would say: ‘You know, we’re kicking around some names. Do you have any thoughts here?’ But it doesn’t bother me now.”
The New York Times interview also added some background to the sexist statement Dave made during the warm-up of the April 20 taping of the Late Show. When asked what advice Dave would give the class of 2015, he replied that people should “Treat a lady like a whore and a whore like a lady.” Obviously, David’s comment caused quite a stir among his fans, but the New York Times interview revealed that he immediately understood what he said was wrong. After making those remarks, he added “I don’t know why I would say something like that.”
What do you think about Dave’s thoughts of a woman or a black person replacing him, HollywoodLifers?
