Ellen Pompeo Tells ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans: How Meredith Will Go On After Derek’s Death

Mon, April 27, 2015 1:41pm EDT by Lauren Cox 19 Comments

For the first time since Patrick Dempsey’s beloved McDreamy was killed off of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ Ellen Pompeo is reaching out to the angry fans in hopes they’ll stick around to see what happens next.

Ellen Pompeo, 45, might be lonesome on the Grey’s Anatomy set without her on-screen husband, Patrick Dempsey, 49 — but she’s still ready for the next step. For the very first time, the actress behind Meredith Grey has addressed the death of Derek Shepherd and encouraged fans to believe in her and the show’s future without him.

Ellen Pompeo Reacts To Patrick Dempsey Leaving ‘Grey’s

Derek’s death marked the end of an era, but where there’s an ending there’s always a new beginning to follow. That’s something that Meredith Grey herself wants you, the longtime fans of the show, to believe in.

“I have always said what keeps me going are the fans,” Meredith stated in a screen grab she shared on her Twitter account on Monday, April 27. “I am honored and excited to tell the story of how Meredith goes on in the face of what feels like the impossible.”

Then, Meredith addressed the fans even more directly, “I hope you will all join me on her journey.”

While this is the first time Ellen has spoken out since Patrick’s character was killed on the April 23 episode, it is also pretty obvious that her tweet was prompted by the thousands — if not millions — of fans who have vowed to never watch the show again.

Ellen Addresses Other Peoples Losses

In her lengthy but extremely heartfelt Twitter post, Ellen also made sure to remind everyone that although Derek’s death was truly tragic, it is the unfortunate ending that so many others face in their real lives.

“There are so many people out there who have suffered tremendous loss and tragedy,” she explained, showing her immense sympathy for those who have experienced what Meredith has. “Husbands and wives of soldiers, victims of senseless violence and parents who have lost children. People who get up each day and do what feels like is the impossible.”

Hopefully Ellen’s words grasp the attention of Grey’s longtime fans and keep them watching to see what happens next.
