We laughed with him, we cried with him, and we fell in love with him over and over again for 11 long seasons. So, now that [SPOILER] is dead, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ feels like it died, too.
As a longtime fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I have to say that the death of [SPOILER] is enough to make me cancel my DVR subscription to the show. After spending 11 long seasons investing in and rooting for [SPOILER]’s relationship, he was ripped from the show for what seems like no real reason. Not only that but [SPOILER]’s reaction to his death was enough to make me never want to see her face again.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Derek Gets Killed Off, Show Is Ruined Now
Even as I sit here writing this, I still can’t believe that he — Derek Shepherd — is really gone. I, like most of you, have been watching Grey’s since March 2005, and after over 9 years investing in McDreamy’s charm, his epic MerDer romance, and their life together through all of the ups and downs, it’s all over. Just like that.
When the episode ended last night I felt like someone I knew personally had been taken from me. My first thought? “I never want to watch this show again.”
Looking back on it now, I wish that I could tell you I was just in a very emotional and angry state, but the truth is I really don’t want to watch the show anymore. Why would I? A main character, someone who was a large piece of the foundation of a show I fell in love with 9 years ago, is gone.
I can’t speak for everyone who watches the show, but for me, personally, I don’t care about what happens to Meredith from here on out. I know the show is called Grey’s Anatomy, but as much as the show was about her finding herself, making a career for herself, and dealing with her wacky family, it was Derek that was her anchor.
Knowing that Meredith would always find her way back to Derek no matter what she went through was what built Grey’s Anatomy, and now it feels like it’s been knocked down.
And, as for Meredith’s life after Derek, I don’t want to know what that entails. Again, I can’t speak for everyone, but her cold and seemingly heartless reaction to him dying made me despise her. How is it possible that I could be sitting on my couch ugly crying over a man I only know through her eyes, and she’s just standing there rubbing his chest like it’s all going to be okay? No, that doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.
Derek Deserved A Much Better Death
On top of him being killed off and the show thinking it can go on without him, how can anyone justify the fate Derek was handed?
Derek was a genius. He was one of, if not the, top neurosurgeons in America. Derek was such a great doctor, such a brilliant man, that the President of the United States asked him to come and work for him.
Derek Shepherd was our knight in shining whatever.
And we repay him for his brilliance by making him braindead? A vegetable living on machines? How insulting.
If he really had to go, then he should have died with some dignity. Sure, he saved all of those people on the road after their accident, but there had to be better options to end his life. Why couldn’t he have died instantly? Not just a hero, but pain free? Why couldn’t he be spared the torture of knowing he was going to die on that operating room table?
Derek deserved better, and I don’t think I’ll ever get over how angry I am about it.
Tell me, HollywoodLifers — Do YOU think that Grey’s Anatomy is over now that Derek is gone?
