Patrick Dempsey, 49, is exiting everyone’s favorite medical drama after 10 years, according to a new report. Patrick’s character’s presence has been lessened on Grey’s Anatomy since November, due in part to allegedly having differences with the show’s executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, 45. Find out what’s going on with Patrick’s diminished role here!
We didn’t see this one coming! A decade after Patrick made Dr. McDreamy a household name, it seems as though the actor might be saying goodbye to his beloved character. Apparently, it’s because he and his boss Shonda haven’t been jelling lately.
“[Shonda] suspended him for a while, and the word on set is that he isn’t coming back full time,” a source told Page Six. “Given all the past problems with Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington, there is little tolerance on the show for troublesome talent.”
A rep for the recently-divorced actor has denied the story.
In the most recent episode, April 16’s “One Flight Down,” Patrick’s character, Derek, happened to miss a meeting with the President of the United States and didn’t even check in with his stressed out wife, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). When she finally decided to call the cops, a police car pulled in her driveway.
The most telling part of the story? Derek is still missing. Uh-oh.
Patrick hasn’t been shy about wanting to leave the show. Most recently, he told The Portland Press Herald that he had plans to exit “very soon.”
Excuse us while we go grab a box of Kleenex, because we legit might just cry! So what’s in store next for Patrick?
“I do want to act [after Grey’s Anatomy], but I might take a break and go race and travel first. I haven’t found a piece of material I want to do yet,” he has said of his future plans.
