Uh-oh. Ben Affleck’s in hot water! Newly leaked emails from the Sony hack prove the actor is guilty of persuading producers of ‘Finding Your Roots’ to censor his ancestors’ past as slave owners, even though it went against PBS’ editorial rules.
All eyes are on Ben Affleck, 42, after it’s been revealed that the Boston-native insisted on keeping his family’s secret past under wraps. When he participated in PBS’ docu-series, Finding Your Roots, he begged producers not to allow the audience to know his relatives were once slave owners. Yikes!
Ben Affleck Slave Owner Relatives: Truth Revealed About ‘Finding Your Roots’
Unfortunately, the infamous Sony hack has revealed a ton of celeb secrets, and Ben is the latest victim. We totally understand why Jennifer Garner‘s hubby would want to keep it quiet that his ancestry includes some slave owners. But isn’t honesty always the best policy?
Instead of learning the complete truth about the Gone Girl actor’s background, viewers were shown glowing stories of how his third grandfather worked as a mystic in the Civil War and how his sixth grandfather fought in the American Revolution as a patriot.
But there’s no mention of slavery in the episode, according to The Daily Mail, which acquired email evidence of Ben’s plan to censor his past. Ben’s request was revealed in leaked Sony emails between Sony Chief Executive Michael Lynton and Finding Your Roots host Henry Louis Gates, Jr., that were published by WikiLeaks.
The emails were written in July 2014 and Ben’s feature on Finding Your Roots was shown in September 2014.
The convo starts out with Henry asking for help on what he calls a “dilemma.”
“Confidentially, for the first time, one of our guests has asked us to edit out something about one of his ancestors–the fact that he owned slaves,” the show’s host wrote to Michael. “We’ve never had anyone ever try to censor or edit what we found. He’s a megastar. What do we do?”
Michael’s advice was this: “All things being equal I would definitely take it out.” But he warned Henry that doing this could make things “tricky.”
Tricky, indeed! Ben has yet to comment on the leak.
Hopefully Ben will be able to put this drama behind him — because he has to gear up for the release of his new superhero movie, where he will play the iconic role of Batman. To see the most up-to-date trailer for Batman V Superman, click here!
