Michael Phelps, 29, is back in the water! After serving his six-month ban for a 2014 DUI arrest, the most decorated Olympian of all time confirmed what everyone suspected — that 18 gold medals aren’t enough! Michael intends to add more to his historic record by competing in the 2016 Olympics!
Michael Phelps & 2016 Olympics: He Plans To Compete In Rio De Janeiro
Michael sat down for a press conference on April 15 in Mesa, Arizona, right before the 2015 Arena Pro Swim Series. He spoke about his suspension from swimming, his stint in rehab and his plans to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“The last couple of months have probably been the hardest couple of months I’ve ever had to go through in my entire life,” Michael said the press conference.
Michael was arrested for his second DUI in September 2014, prompting USA Swimming to suspend the Olympian for six months from participating in any sanctioned event. He was ultimately forced to withdraw from the 2015 Swimming World Championships.
Michael clearly knew how badly he screwed up, as he entered rehab just a week after his arrest. During the Arizona press conference, he admitted that his out of control behavior has done a lot more than tarnish his Gold-medal reputation.
“I take full responsibility for all of my actions,” Michael said. “I’ve hurt a lot of people and it’s been terrible.”
It’s great to hear that Michael has regained control of his life and is back to swimming. He reportedly retired after the 2012 Olympics in London, finishing a career with 18 gold medals. He couldn’t stay dry for long! He announced he was coming out of retirement in 2014 for more Olympic glory!
Michael Phelps Engaged To Longtime Girlfriend — Congrats
Michael’s life seems to be going swimmingly. Along with undergoing rehab, completing his suspension and training for the Olympics, Michael’s getting married! He proposed to his girlfriend, Nicole Johnson, in February 2015. Michael posted a picture of him and Nicole rolling around in the snow with the caption “She said yes.” Out of all the gold in Michael Phelps’s life, we bet that there’s none sweeter than the ring around his Nicole’s finger right now.
