While Meredith and Derek are back to being perfect, Amelia and Owen reach the end of their short-lived romance on the latest episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’
On the April 9 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) gets inside Amelia’s (Caterina Scorsone) head about her relationship with Owen (Kevin McKidd). While that causes Amelia to break things off, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) mysteriously goes missing when he’s supposed to be in Washington D.C. to resign from his job at the White House.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Amelia & Owen Break Up
Well, now that Derek is back he and Meredith can hardly keep their hands off of each other. It’s actually kind of adorable, if not a total TMI.
The two of them are trying to start their day with a romp or two in the sack but, of course, real life kicks in when Bailey starts crying and Meredith reminds Derek he has a flight to catch. Later, when they are having breakfast with the kids and getting ready to leave, Amelia comes in through the front door wearing the same clothes she was wearing the night before — something Meredith points out to us.
Then, it happens: Owen comes in the front door to hand Amelia her cell phone. At first he doesn’t even see Meredith and Derek standing there staring at him, but when he does he begins to stutter before trying to make a quick exit. Derek offers them both breakfast to make things a little less awkward and let Owen and Amelia know he’s okay with their relationship, but they are both caught completely off guard so they decline. Hey, you tried, Derek!
When it’s finally time for Derek to head back to D.C. and resign from his big-wig job, he tells Meredith to wait for hi before they share one last epic kiss. They sure make it look fun to be in love again, don’t they?
Over at the hospital, Dr. Pierce is being ignored by the other doctor, Ethan, she went on a date with. As she’s complaining about his lack of attention after their first date, Callie overhears their conversation and reveals that she’s no longer seeing the hot cop from the last episode. Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as Meredith and Derek.
Once Meredith gets in she corners Amelia and questions her about her romance with Owen. Amelia immediately gets defensive, and Meredith tells her she’s only inquiring because she promised Christina (sob!) that she would look out for him. That’s not enough to help Amelia cool off, and Meredith just reminds her to be “careful” before finally leaving her alone. Geez.
Unfortunately, Meredith’s inquisition pissed Amelia off enough to make her snap at Stephanie, who was assigned to be her resident for the day. Not only does she bite her head off, but she dismisses her and tells her she doesn’t “need” any help today.
A Patient With A Severed Penis Comes Into The E.R.
Down in the emergency room things get very, very interesting very, very quickly. Two chefs — a man and a woman — come in covered in blood. The man is limping, and the woman is screaming for help. When they get the two onto beds they are trying to find out where the mans blood is coming from, but he just keeps saying “my wife” over and over again. They tell him his wife is fine, assuming the woman is his wife, but when she tells them she’s not the doctors say they will call his wife. Both people immediately scream “no” — and that’s when the man tells the doctors that his wife cut off his penis. Yes, really.
It’s at that moment Bailey finally takes the take out bag the woman was carrying and opens it to find the man’s penis, which she describes as “a big one.” Hilarious! But, also, horrific.
April is sure she can get the penis re-attached, but she wants Catherine Avery’s help. Dr. Webber shoots her idea down very, very quickly. As you might remember, they had a bad break up not once, but twice, so it’s pretty obvious why he doesn’t want her in the hospital.
Later, the chef whose penis has been cut off tells April he doesn’t want to report his wife to the police. As he’s doing this, the woman is telling Bailey that his wife is insane — that she cut off his penis and left it in her stock pot. When Bailey asks if they’ve been seeing each other, the woman doesn’t respond. Instead, she just asks if the penis will work again once its re-attached. I guess that’s our answer!
However, April didn’t listen to Dr. Webber and she calls Catherine Avery to come and help with the re-attachment surgery. Awkward!
While that is going on, Callie and Amelia are struggling over a young patient with a severely damaged spine. The girl is a golf player and repairing her spine is incredibly important for her future, but neither doctor can agree over how to approach it. When Amelia goes into the girl’s back without taking Callie’s suggestion she messes up, and Bailey’s husband is forced to go get Callie so they can try and work together to save this girl’s spine.
Unfortunately, they fail, and Amelia immediately blames herself. Well, not just herself — she blames Owen, too. When Amelia and Callie were first arguing over which surgery to perform on the girl, Owen chimed in and defended Amelia. So, when he sees her after the surgery and asks her how things went, she drags him into a supply room to chew him out for taking her side.
She’s positive he only did it because they have a thing going on, and she’s going on and on about how mixing professional and personal relationships can ruin things so quickly. Although she does have a point, she’s acting a little crazy and it’s definitely confusing Owen.
“This was a mistake,” she tells Owen, and he storms out of the room without saying a word.
Dr. Pierce Finds Out Why She’s A Terrible Date
In other news, Dr. Pierce finally confronted Ethan about why he’s given her the brush off since their date. He tells her that she talked too much, she talked the whole time, and she even ordered for him and paid the bill. Turn off after turn off after turn off. When he’s done telling her the truth, she doesn’t say a word and just walks out of the room.
Later, when she tells Alex what happened while they are in surgery, he tells her that the guy sucks and that she should want to find someone who wants to listen to her. It’s one of those rare moments we understand why everyone in the hospital is always turning to Alex for advice. He’s not so bad once you get passed the tough guy stuff, right?
Catherine not only managed to re-attach the chef’s penis, but there’s a good chance he’ll get all of his functions back once it’s healed. Not only is he relieved, but he called his wife to come and see him. Yes, the wife that cut off his penis in the first place!
Catherine tries to have her removed, but once they start talking she realizes she is out of her depth. The chef apologizes to his wife and says they had an agreement for waitresses and hostesses only, and apparently she was really upset because he had something with his sous chef. Um, okay, this is the weirdest relationship ever.
For some reason, Maggie decides that she wants to try again with Ethan, even despite what Alex said. She quietly explains to him that she talks too much when she’s nervous, and that she really liked him and that’s why she ruined their date. Although it was unintentional, her confession is still sweet, and it works. Ethan tells Maggie that “next time” he’ll do the talking. Aw!
Dr. Webber & Catherine Get Back Together
Back at Meredith and Derek’s house, Amelia walks into the kitchen as Mer is reading the newspaper and enjoying a rare quiet moment without the kids. There’s an awkward silence between them, but Amelia finally tells Meredith that she doesn’t know her the way she thinks she does. She tells Meredith that she hasn’t been through what Amelia has been through, and then tells her to back off before walking out. Whoa.
The man who had his penis re-attached starts screaming, and the sous chef runs out of his room quickly. When they enter his room they find that he’s covered in blood, and he tells them that she cut off his penis. That poor man!
Thankfully, Stephanie runs after the sous chef and gets her to give up the penis before she flushes it down a toilet. She’s heartbroken because she loved him, he told her she was his heart, and he took his wife back instead. Catherine is still around, so her and Stephanie are able to fix it. Again.
While Stephanie works on repairing the penis, Dr. Webber confronts Catherine in the prep room. He tells her that when they broke up he was trying to propose to her, and that he still loves her, and that he isn’t going anywhere. It’s really sweet, and then they kiss. Aw!
But, as always at Grey-Sloane Memorial, there are very few happy endings.
Just before the episode ends a phone call comes in for Meredith, and it’s the White House looking for Derek. He never showed up for his meeting, and no one has heard from him since he left the house that morning. Meredith doesn’t panic just yet and instead shrugs it off by assuming his flight got delayed.
However, there are bad vibes all over that final moment. So, where is Derek?
