Now, that is some serious class, Mr. Stewart. Following a bit of controversy, soon to be former host of ‘The Daily Show’ Jon Stewart is speaking up in defense of his successor, Trevor Noah.
When it was announced that relative newcomer Trevor Noah would be taking over The Daily Show later this year, the news was quickly overshadowed by some of the comedian’s past Tweets coming to life, many of which were deemed offensive. On the Apr. 6 episode of the show, in light of the controversy, current host Jon Stewart stepped up to defend his replacement– and he had some words for the haters. Check out what he had to say!
Jon Stewart Defends Trevor Noah
That is how you pass the torch with dignity.
Jon Stewart wants fans of The Daily Show to, if nothing else, give his replacement Trevor Noah a chance, before forming an opinion. “I know there was a large kerfuffle on Twitter,” Jon said, intentionally mangling the pronunciation of the social media platform.
“But I can say this without hesitation,” he added. “Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect,” and then a pause. “Or not,” to which the audience erupted into laughter.
“Just as I earned your trust and respect– or did not,” Jon said. “Or sometimes earned it, and then lost it, and then kind of got it back, but then it was like f–k that guy,” he added.
‘It’s Gonna Be Well Worth It’
Taking a moment to implore his audience though, Jon got serious with his plea for viewers to, at the very least, wait before judging Trevor. “I do hope you give him the opportunity to earn that trust and respect,” Jon said. “My experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual, and man, I think if you give him that time it’s gonna be well worth it.”
I mean, how great is that? While Trevor has yet to make a lasting impression, one thing is for sure: Jon will be very missed at that desk.
Were you offended by Trevor’s Tweets? Do you plan to give him a chance?
