John Oliver had a very good reason for taking a week off from ‘Last Week Tonight’ on March 29 — he was in Moscow conducting a top-secret interview with Edward Snowden! The 15-minute interview about government surveillance aired on the comedian’s talk show April 5. Check it out!
Well, this was unexpected! John Oliver, 37, traveled all the way to Russia for an interview that aired on the April 5 episode of Last Week Tonight. In a shocking announcement, the HBO talk show host revealed that he’d sat down with Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency employee who leaked classified government documents to the media and is currently seeking asylum in Russia after being charged with violating the Espionage Act.

During the interview, Edward discussed his controversial decision to leak the classified information, and said he stands by what he’s done. “I’ve evaluated all the documents that are in the archive,” he explained.”I do understand what I turned over. I recognized the concern.”
But, in the end, he revealed that the importance of informing the American public was greater than the risk. “The NSA has the greatest surveillance capabilities we’ve ever seen in history,” he said. “What they will argue is that they don’t use this for nefarious purposes against American citizens. In some ways, that’s true. But the real problem is that they’re using these capabilities to make us vulnerable to them.”
Despite the serious discussion at-hand, John made sure to crack a few jokes, bringing some light and laughs into the controversial topic.
Edward Snowden: Why He Leaked NSA Documents To The Press
And if you’re still wondering why Edward decided to make such a bold move and subsequently come clean about it, John got the answer.
“I did this to give the American people to decide for themselves the kind of government they want to have,” the computer professional admitted. “That is a conversation that the American people deserve to decide.”
The pair also talked about sending nude photos, and Edward gave John his stance on whether or not anyone should be sending d–k pics! Check out the full interview in the video above!
