Get ready to relive ‘Groundhog Day’– over and over again! On Apr. 2 it was confirmed that the Bill Murray film will be reimagined and brought to the Broadway stage as a musical! So, will the original star reprise his role?
Groundhog Day is heading to Broadway in 2017! Groundhog Day is heading to Broadway in 2017! Groundhog Day is heading to Broadway in 2017! Okay, that was a lame joke, but it was necessary. The 1993 classic Groundhog Day, about a man who is forced to relive the same day over and over again, will hit the Great White Way in a couple of years. Bill Murray, of course, originally played that ill-fated fellow, and we have to wonder, will the iconic actor reprise his role on stage?
‘Groundhog Day’ Broadway Musical: Will Bill Murray Star
Well, this really is a little bit of a Groundhog Day-style deja vu, isn’t it?
Groundhog Day is pretty much one of the greatest films of all time, and pretty soon, we’ll get to relive it all over again in a whole new way! (I promise I’ll stop making those terrible puns, as soon as the excitement wears off.)
After some rumors, it is now official that the movie will be interpreted as a musical for the Broadway stage, and will begin performances in January, 2017. Casting has not been announced just yet, however, until it is we are gonna just go ahead and hope that Bill plays the part that he originated over 20 years ago.
‘Groundhog Day’ Is In Good Hands
We don’t know who will act in the production, however, we do know some of whom will be behind the scenes– and it bodes very well for us! The creative team will be helmed by compose Tim Minchin and director Matthew Warcus.
The two also notably helped to bring Matilda the Musical to Broadway. Based upon Matilda, the classic film about a powerful little girl, the musical opened in 2013 and went onto win four Tony Awards– and is still packing in audiences nightly.
What do you guys think of Groundhog Day as a Broadway musical? Do you want to see Bill reprise his role?
