Everyone is talking about ‘It Follows,’ the new horror movie taking the country by storm! However, what they’re not talking about is the super weird and uncomfortable storyline about how the ghost ruins your life — through sex.
I’ve coined the term “STD ghost” for the theme of It Follows, but I know I’ll need to explain. The movie, which was originally set to be released on VOD on March 25 and now is instead opening worldwide in theaters, has been reviewed as one of the scariest horror movies in years! So, what exactly is “it” that they’re talking about? Let me break it down for you.
‘It Follows’: Horror Movie Villain Spreads Through Sex
It Follows is based on a young woman, Jay (Maika Monroe), who is being haunted by a creature that can look like anyone — a stranger or a friend. However, the odd thing is the fact that she “caught” this demon, through sex.
“At some point I started adding to [the story], connecting it to something that can be passed on through sex,” Director David Mitchell told the National Post, saying it helped bridge the emotional and physical connection.
“It’s up to Mika, in those moments when these crazy things are happening, that we really believe this character exists,” he continued. “It would be so easy for it to fall into B movie territory where it’s just screaming. And she has that. She can do the soft, subtle, gentle performance that a lot of the film needs, but then also take it to these crazy, chaotic places. And we go with her.”
How To Get Rid Of The STD Ghost
So, how do you cure this STD ghost? Well, you have two options: have sex with someone else and pass it to them, or let it kill you — then it will head backward down the line. Sounds like a lose lose situation.
Which path would the actress behind Jay choose if this actually happened to her?
“I’d probably first fly to the other side of the world, start there, because I’d have a lot of time, and then I’d probably try and pass it on. Let’s be honest, I’d try and pass it on,” she told MTV. “[I’d probably tell the person.] I’d be like, ‘just keep passing it,’ so it goes deeper and deeper in and I don’t have to worry about it anymore. Well, I probably will. Maybe.”
Hey, you can’t really blame her right? What do you think, HollywoodLifers? You can catch It Follows in theaters everywhere on March 27.
