1.) He’s a Jersey Boy
Though he and his family currently live in Los Angeles, Harry was originally born in New Jersey. He, along with his mother, father, and brother, all packed up and moved west when Harry was just 4 years old.
2.) Harry Had A #1 Song When He Was A Teenager
Harry released the song “World Is Gone” when he was 19, and it went to No.1 on Hype Machine, a popular MP3 website! Harry’s song beat out tracks by Maroon 5, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent, creating a buzz around him as an up-and-coming R&B/pop musician.
3.) His Best Day Was Also His Worst
Harry had the best day of his life when he met with the recording executive who launched Lady Gaga‘s career. It was a good meeting, but the timing was terrible. The next night Harry was admitted to a hospital for difficulty breathing. It was then, on June 21st, 2013, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer originating from white blood cells that is considered highly curable if detected early. Faced with a life and death situation, he had to put his music career on hold to undergo the necessary chemotherapy treatments to save his life.
4.) He Has Two Huge Fans (And Close Friends)
While he was undergoing the heaviest stages of his cancer treatment, a lot of Harry’s friends couldn’t handle how real it got. Cancer is scary, and many of his crew stopped talking to him or refused to visit. Except for two who stayed loyal: Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Harry met the Jenner sisters through mutual friends and they struck up a close friendship. Even better? These two weren’t afraid of cancer. In fact, Kylie visited Harry in the hospital so much that people suddenly thought the two were dating. But, Harry insists that the three of them are just really close friends. Aw!
5.) His Message Is As Important As His Music
Currently, Harry has 45 thousand Twitter followers and over 176 thousand followers on Instagram. And it’s not just because he’s funny. Harry documented every single day of his cancer treatment, showing both the ugly and positive side of what a cancer patient experiences. But, he always kept his positive outlook, a sense of humor, and a determined attitude — which made him an inspiration to thousands undergoing their own struggle with the disease to be brave and stay strong.
BONUS FACT: Harry’s story has a happy ending! As of Jan. 2014, after seven long months of chemotherapy, he beat the disease and has been cancer free ever since. Congrats, Harry!
