Since the first episode of ‘Better Call Saul,’ no one’s backstory has been more of a mystery than Mike’s. Finally, in the Mar. 9 episode, we may get to the bottom of how Mike got to find himself inside that tollbooth!

For fans of Breaking Bad, Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) became a favorite very early on, and his role in Better Call Saul has been one of the most mysterious. Finally, on the Mar. 9 episode, we might get a little bit of insight as to how Mike went from an ex-cop to a parking lot tollbooth worker to the drug dealing criminal we know he ultimately becomes. Plus, we might even find out more details about his adorable granddaughter!

‘Better Call Saul’: Mike’s Past

When Better Call Saul premiered, it was the question that shocked us all: What in the heck was Mike doing validating parking passes outside a low-level courthouse?

Well, obviously not all will be revealed since we’re only halfway through the first season, however, on the upcoming episode, we might be getting some concrete truths.

For starters, how did Mike’s granddaughter, whom we all saw him adore throughout all of Breaking Bad, come to be? In this clip, we get our first clues as to the answer, and it’s pretty heartbreaking.

“Mike, I gotta ask,” a young woman says to him, after he asks what’s wrong (and calls her “honey”). “I know I need to just move on from this, but I keep thinking about… how before Matty died, for a few weeks there, he was different.”

‘Different How?’

Now, here’s where things get interesting. “Different how?” Mike asks her.

“He barely ate, he wasn’t sleeping, he snapped at me about the stupidest things,” the woman tells a stone faced Mike. “He wouldn’t talk to me, he clammed right up.”

Mike takes it all in, but all he can say is, “cops aren’t really touchy-feely.” Well, that certainly proves his point.

Okay, hypothesis time! I’m thinking Matt was Mike’s son, and the two of them were both on the force together. An incident went down where they were in the line of duty and whatever it was killed Matt and had Mike commit some act which he made him turn over his badge for good. Of course, this is all a guess, but we’ll find out more on the new episode!

What do you think Mike’s past is? Is this Matt person his son?
