It’s just been confirmed that ‘Today Show’ host Savannah Guthrie will be filling in at the ‘Nightly News’ desk while the Brian Williams backlash continues to unfold. But is her move to weeknights a permanent one?

There’s a game of news anchor musical chairs taking place over at NBC. In the midst of the Brian Williams saga, in which the Nightly News host confessed to fibbing, his spot delivering weeknight news has been left up for grabs (for the moment, anyways). To fill in for the time being, Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, 43, has been tapped, but will she step away from Today to permanently host Nightly?

Savannah Guthrie Replacing Brian Williams

It was the “misrememberance” heard ’round the world, and the fallout is nowhere near over.

While Brian, 55, takes his “leave of absence” from NBC, Lester Holt had originally been tapped as his fill in. However, while Lester himself is away dealing with a family emergency, Savannah will step up to the plate as anchor. Savannah made her Nightly debut on Mar. 2, and will continue appearing indefinitely until Lester is able to return.

Savannah will be pulling double duty, as she is not stepping down from Today, however, the move is not expected to be permanent– well, not yet anyway.

The Brian Williams Fallout

As of now, Brian is still expected to return NBC after his leave of absence. That is, of course, not a sure thing at this point. When news first broke in February that Brian had fabricated some of his stories about reporting in Iraq, he quickly stepped away from the Nightly News desk for “several days.”

It seemed that the public needed a bit more space from B-Dubs, because days later it was announced that he had been suspended from NBC for six months. Only time will tell whether Brian really will return after that period, but one thing is for sure: It’ll be exciting to watch Savannah try her hand on the PM broadcast waves (and it’s always exciting to see more women on television, right?).

What do you think of Savannah as a replacement for Brian? Do you think NBC should give him another chance?
