Lacey Spears, the mother accused of poisoning her 5-year-old child with a lethal dose of salt, has been found guilty of murder!
Lacey Spears, has been found guilty of murdering her 5-year-old son, Garnett, who died on Jan. 23, 2014. The jury deliberated for two and half days before it found the 27-year-old mother guilty of second-degree, depraved indifference murder on Mar. 2.
Lacey Spears Guilty: Mother Who Poisoned Son With Salt Convicted
Lacey, who was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter, had maintained her innocence throughout the trial despite mounting evidence against her, reports CBS New York.
Investigators had found two feeding bags that tested positive for sodium, an open container of sea salt in her house and an online history that allegedly showed her researching the dangers of sodium.
In a bizarre twist, Lacey had taken to social media to document her son’s alleged battle with a mysterious illness prior to being charged. Prosecutors claim the mother actually enjoyed the “attention and sympathy” she had garnered from having a sick son.
“Although her son was incredibly special, he was not sick – he was not sick until his mother made him sick,” said prosecutor Doreen Lloyd.
“Lacey Spears is a calculating child killer who researched, planned and executed the intentional poisoning of her son, Garnett Spears, with salt. She is no longer the mother of Garnett Spears because she murdered him.”
Did Lacey Have A Motive?
Her defense team led by lawyer Stephen Riebling argued that the evidence was circumstantial and that she had no motive to murder her son.
“There is no evidence in this case that legitimately answers the question ‘Why?’ ” he said.
While her sister and father hugged each other and cried, Lacey showed little emotion when the guilty verdict was read.
