Leonard’s wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed her husband’s death to the New York Times on Feb. 27, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The actor had been fighting the disease since last year, and attributed it to years of smoking. Earlier this week he was hospitalized and treated for the lung disease.
The Hollywood actor was the original Mr. Spock in the legendary show, Star Trek. Prior to his death, he was keeping busy with a variety of projects, including reprising his most famous role in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness. He also completed an 11-episode guest role on the sci-fi series Fringe. He also had multiple achievements as a photographer, a director and a musician.
Before he died, he left one more piece of advice for his beloved fans via his Twitter, “A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP.” So sad.
