After Giuliana Rancic made a nasty comment about Zendaya’s dreadlocks at the Oscars, the young actress fired back at the ‘ignorant’ remarks with a lengthy Twitter rant. Good for you, Z!
Zendaya, 18, has bravely decided to stand up for herself, her family members, and many of her mentors after Giuliana Rancic, 40, claimed that Zendaya’s dreadlocks must smell like “weed.” Now, the former Shake It Up actress is blasting the E! host for her comments, and drawing attention to the “harsh” criticism of African American hair.
Zendaya Responds To Giuliana Rancic’s ‘Racist’ Comments
“There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe.
Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect,” Zendaya wrote on Twitter on Feb. 23, the day after the Oscars.
Zendaya was responding to Giuliana’s comment that she must have smelled like “patchouli oil” or “weed” just because she wore dreadlocks on the red carpet. Yikes, that definitely crossed the line, G.
“To say that an 18 year old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or ‘weed’ is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked,” Zendaya continued, slamming the red carpet host for being so disrespectful.
Zendaya’s Family Loves Dreadlocks, She Proudly Defends Them
Sadly, it wasn’t only Zendaya who was offended by Guiliana’s nasty remark. As Zendaya pointed out in her rant, many members of her family wear their hair in dreadlocks, and she couldn’t be more proud of them.
“I’ll have you know my father, brother, best childhood friend, and little cousins all have locs,” Zendaya shared.
“There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair. My wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”
Wow. Zendaya’s response to Giuliana’s comment was not only well-written and focused, but shows the 18-year-old’s intense maturity and spirited beliefs.
