Oh snap! Things got real and very close to home at the Oscars when host NPH dissed the Academy for nominating only ‘ best and the whitest’ of the bunch! Yikes — we wonder how the Academy felt about this one!
Yep, Neil Patrick Harris went there. At the 87th annual Academy Awards, the funny man and host of the night took a jab at the Academy by addressing the racism controversy in the 2015 Oscar nominations, after many felt Selma was snubbed. Later in the night, he even made people squirm in their seats by going up to Selma actor, David Oyelowo, making a controversial joke!
Neil Patrick Harris Disses Oscars At Academy Awards Over Racism Controversy
Neil took a huge risk at the Oscars, which may have been too much for some! First, he started out the night by recognizing the elephant in the room — the lack of nominees of non-white actors, actresses and directors.
Neil opened the night be saying that the Oscars were celebrating the “whitest…er, the brightest” of the bunch — which definitely got many laughs!
But while Neil made a joke out of it, many people were actually outraged when the nominations came out, and felt that films like Selma were snubbed. People pointed out that most of the actors and filmmakers nominated were in fact, white.
The film, which chronicles the life of Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.’s campaign for equal voting, only got two Oscar nominations — one for Best Picture and one for Best Original Song. Many thought director Ava DuVernay was snubbed, as well as David.
So get this — later in the ceremony, Neil went up to David and when people started clapping he said, “Oh, now you like him!” Too far, Neil?
Neil Patrick Harris’ Oscars Opening — Host Disses Kanye West In Monologue
Neil was just spewing out disses all night! In his opening number, he was joined by Anna Kendrick, but then Jack Black jumped in and interrupted the song and dance!
Midway through Neil’s opening number Neil said, “I secretly hope somebody pulls a Kanye West,” referring to his Grammys diss to Beck. We bet Yeezy didn’t like that one!
What do YOU think of Neil’s disses HollywoodLifers? Did he take things too far, or not far enough? Sound off with your thoughts below!
