‘The Odd Couple’ remake premiered on Feb. 19 and, to put it kindly, the reviews were not great. However, after watching the first episode, it’s clear the comedy does have a lot to offer!
A recreation of The Odd Couple is not the easiest sell: an old-fashioned, multi camera take on an unnecessary concept. However, if you can get past the initial impression that the series is too lacking in the unique, you’ll see there’s actually joy to be found in this throwback comedy (plus, hello, Matthew Perry!). Check out the reasons why you should think again about setting that season pass!
‘The Odd Couple’ Premiere
Okay, so the reviews are in, and The Odd Couple isn’t groundbreaking.
It’s also not a fantastic show. Actually, it might not even be a good show. But that doesn’t mean you should write it off completely!
Let’s start with the obvious: Matthew Perry, star of what has remained and probably will always be thought of as one of the best sitcoms of all time, Friends. That has got to mean something as far as Matthew’s sitcom chops right? Right.
Playing the sloppy Oscar, opposite Thomas Lennon‘s neat freak Felix, Matthew is able to play off his costar with the comedic timing of a veteran and the two together are actually believable as friends despite their differences (something that cannot be said of many sitcom pairings).
Something To Offer
Also, alongside the two leads, the supporting cast is equally skilled. Consisting of comedy vets Yvette Nicole Brown, Dave Foley and Wendell Pierce, the B story lines are guaranteed to be anchored with just as much hilarity as the A story lines.
Also, it needs to be pointed out: although the pilot of The Odd Couple was kinda stiff and many of the jokes fell flat, you cannot judge an entire series by the very first episode. You know what other shows had a rough first few episodes? That Friends show we mentioned, as well as another sitcom you may have heard of, Seinfeld.
I don’t mean to say that this new comedy will live up to either of those two legendary shows. All I’m suggesting is that, before dismissing it completely and permanently, maybe sit back and relax, and give the first few episodes an unbiased chance.
You might be surprised at how willing you’ll be to enjoy yourself.
Did you watch the first episode of The Odd Couple? What did you think?
