On Feb. 17, news broke that Darren Criss would be stepping into the role of Hedwig in ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ on Broadway beginning Apr. 29. Though he’s got massive stilettos to fill, he is absolutely perfect for the part!
In order to don Hedwig’s flowing blonde wig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway, the leading lady must, ironically, have some serious balls. However, that shouldn’t be a problem for the newest gender-bending rockstar to step into the role: Glee star Darren Criss. Check out all the reasons why Darren is going to slay as Hedwig!
Darren Criss In ‘Hedwig & The Angry Inch’
Darren Criss is saying goodbye to Glee in a major way.
Following the series wrap of the musical dramedy, Darren will begin a three-month run of performances on Broadway as Hedwig, the transgendered singer of an East German rock band (the “angry inch” refers to the result of his botched gender operation). It’s a complicated part with both physical and emotional demands, which is precisely why we know Darren is going to own it.
For starters, Hedwig will hardly be Darren’s first foyer into theater. In fact, he made his professional stage debut at the ripe age of ten in a production of Fanny. He made his Broadway debut in 2012, replacing Daniel Radcliffe as the lead in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, selling out the show every night.
Blaine Can Do Anything
Of course, the main reason we know Darren can do anything is because of his work playing Blaine on Glee. Much like the role of Hedwig, Blaine has been very buzzed about due to its progressive nature: Blaine is (when he entered the show) an out high school student which, in 2010, was rare on television.
Oh, and besides the fact that Blaine shows Darren’s acting chops, it’s also allowed the chance for viewers to see whether he can sing his face off. Spoiler alert: he can.
Darren will be the fifth actor to play Hedwig in this production, following Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, John Cameron Mitchell and Neil Patrick Harris, who won a 2014 Tony Award for originating the part.
Pressure? To be sure, but if there’s any warbler who we know can take the heat, it’s Darren.
How do you guys think Darren will do as Hedwig?
