Absolutely devastating news. On Feb. 10, three young Muslim students were killed in their Summerwalk Circle home near the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus after gunshots were fired around 5:15 p.m.
The police suspect Craig Stephen Hicks. 46, who turned himself in on Feb. 10, and was arrested on charges of first-degree murder for killing the three young victims who have been identified as Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her 19-year-old sister, Mohammad Abu-Salha.

Such tragic news. While officials have yet to say what may have caused the shooting to take place, Craig turned himself in to custody later on the night of Feb. 10, CNN reports. Prior to the shooting, Craig had reportedly made several comments on Facebook that have left many wondering if the victims religion played a part.
Deah and Yusor had been married for just over a month when the shooting occurred. Deah was a second-year student at the UNC School of Dentistry who according to the publication was currently raising money to provide dental care to Syrian refugees in Turkey.
Yusor was planning a similar path and was going to begin studying dental studies in the fall while her young sister attended North Carolina State in Raleigh.
The Summerwalk Circle complex is close to the school’s campus and is reportedly home to many students. After the shooting CNN reports that friends and family members gathered together as they waited for word from officers. Following the tragic news, there was an outcry on Twitter to spread the devastating news with the hashtags, #MuslimLivesMatter as well as #3Muslims and #ChapelHillShooting.
The school released a statement saying, “We are sensitive to the impact an incident of this nature has on campus and in the community. We understand you want to know the facts as quickly as possible. At the same time, we must respect the job our Chapel Hill police have as they investigate this crime.”
At this time according to Alert Carolina Craig is being held in the Durham County Jail and has been charged with 3 counts of 1st Degree Murder.
