‘The Voice’ is back, baby! To commemorate its big return, NBC will air a one-minute ad for the series during the Super Bowl on Feb. 1– but good news– you can watch it right now!
The Voice returns to NBC on Feb. 23 for its–if you can believe it– eighth season! Perhaps more excitingly, this season welcomes back Christina Aguilera, reuniting her with original judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, as well as last season’s newcomer Pharell Williams. Judging by this action-packed promo, the singing competition is going all out this season!
‘The Voice’ Super Bowl Promo: Judges Cage Fight Each Other
“In a far distant future where only the strong survive,” an all-powerful voice informs us as The Voice judges step into what looks like a gladiator ring. “One tradition lives on.”
That tradition refers to The Voice‘s unique process of “blind auditions,” during which would-be contestants sing for their supper while the judges face their backs to them, only using their ears (and heart?) to decide whether to spin their chair around, thus accepting them as a member of their competing team.
“Your attention please, singing time is here” Carson says, slamming his unidentifiable weapon/stick into the ground. “Let the battle begin!” he continues, initiating a belting warrior’s descent into the ring, as she fights for her life with her gorgeous voice.
Musical Judging Chairs
Throughout its previous seven seasons, The Voice has seen a kind of revolving door of famous artists stepping up to and down from the judging panel. The aforementioned originals (Christina, Adam and Blake) also included once-judge Cee Lo Green, who took the fourth season off, along with Christina. Replacing them were recording artists Usher and Shakira.
Christina and Cee Lo both returned for the sixth season, but then again both vacated their chairs for the seventh, making way for Gwen Stefani and Pharrell.
Now, with the eighth season, all of the originals have returned, with the exception of Cee Lo (whose ill-conceived rape tweets and alleged drug charges may be in part responsible for his lack of an invitation back to the show).
Are you excited for the return of The Voice?
