Brandon Vandenburg and Corey Batey — former Vanderbilt University football players — were found guilty on Jan. 27, on all counts for the rape of an unconscious woman in a dorm on June 13, 2013.
Following a lengthy twelve-day trial, former Vanderbilt football players Brandon Vandenburg, 21, and Corey Batey, 21, were found guilty on Jan. 27, for the rape of an unconscious woman. The pair is facing several decades in prison and will be sentenced on March 6, 2015, while their teammates, Jaborian “Tip” McKenzie and Brandon Banks await a trial date for their involvement in the terrible incident.
Vanderbilt Trial: Guilty Of Rape Charges — Verdict Found In Football Case
Following a 12-day trial and a three-hour deliberation, the jury in Nashville, Tennessee delivered their guilty verdicts to Brandon and Corey.
While the families of the two convicted former players were visibly upset, the young men did not appear to react, according to USA Today.
The young woman who went out with Brandon earlier in the evening of June. 13 and was the victim of the awful crime, issued a statement in which she thanked the prosecutors, saying, “You are my heroes and I am so proud of and grateful for each of you. I am also hopeful that the publicity this case has received will lead to a discussion of how we can end sexual violence on college campuses,” she said. “Finally, I want to remind other victims of sexual violence: You are not alone. You are not to blame.”
The site reports that during the trial, jurors saw videos and photos of the rape that detectives had found on Brandon, Corey and Brandon Banks’s phones.
Brandon Vandenburg and the victim were intoxicated on the night of the incident, the site reports and when they arrived at his dorm — Gillette Hall — he carried the unconscious woman into the room and put her on the floor. Then within two minutes, Corey began to assault the woman and the site reports that one man even stuck a water bottle in the woman’s anus while Brandon Vandenburg cheered”Squeeze that s***, Squeeze that s***.”
Jury Finds Corey Batey & Brandon Vandenburg Guilty
Following the court’s decision, Corey’s attorney, Worrick Robinson said that “justice can be harsh” and said that after the verdict was read he told Corey, “I told him I loved him. I told him we’re not going to abandon him. I told him that there are other processes to seek.”
Both Corey and Brandon per Tennessee law were ordered by Judge Monte Watkins to be taken into custody. The site reports that both men then left through the door were jailed inmates are held.
USA Today reports that Corey’s charges include: Count 1: Guilty of aggravated rape, anal penetration with fingers, Count 2: Guilty of aggravated rape, vaginal penetration with fingers, Count 3: Guilty of aggravated rape, mouth penetration with penis, Count 4: Guilty of attempted aggravated rape, vaginal penetration with penis, Count 5: Guilty of aggravated rape, criminal responsibility for anal penetration with water bottle by Brandon Banks, Count 6: Guilty of aggravated sexual battery, contact with private areas and Count 7: Guilty of aggravated sexual battery, slapping of buttocks
Brandon reportedly was found guilty of the same count’s with the addition of, “Guilty of tampering with evidence by destruction of condoms after rape” and “Guilty of unlawful photography, by sending images to other men.”
Brandon and Corey will be sentenced on March 6, 2015 while Jaborian and Brandon Banks await a date for their trial.
