Melissa Benoist is trading in that ‘L’ on her forehead for an ‘S’ on her chest. The ‘Glee’ actress just landed the lead role in CBS’ new show, ‘Supergirl!’
In a world of powerful women on TV — Hayley Atwell in Marvel’s Agent Carter, Kerry Washington in Scandal and Taraji P Henson in Empire, it’s hard to fit in. That is unless your Glee‘s Melissa Benoist: she just landed the lead role of the upcoming CBS show, Supergirl!
‘Supergirl’ Cast: Melissa Benoist Lands Lead
It’s now Melissa’s time to put on the S, our sister site Variety reported.
The show will center around Kara Zoe-El, who is Superman’s cousin and escaped from Krypton. At 24, she’s finally ready to use her superhuman powers and become the hero the world needs. Of course, the show is based off of the DC Comics, and the character has been played before by Helen Slater as well as Laura Vandervoort.
But this time, it’s Melissa’s turn to take on the strong female lead.
“She embodied so many of the characteristics of classic female heroines on the network… We fell in love with the pitch,” Nina Tassler, CBS chair, said of the character, at the TCA Winer Press Tour presentation before they knew Melissa would land the role. “We’re looking for quality, charisma. She’s got to be everywoman.”
We know that Melissa will look amazing — the costumes have been designed by Colleen Atwood, who also created Stephen Amell’s Arrow costume and Grant Gustin’s Flash attire for CBS’ sister channel, The CW. Most of us know Melissa as Marley from Glee and Whiplash, which is up for five Academy Awards. She’s also starring in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation film, The Longest Ride.
More importantly, we can’t wait to see her as Super Girl! Are you excited, HollywoodLifers?
