Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Oprah & Cast Of ‘Selma’ March In Tribute
Today, the world celebrates an iconic leader who dedicated his life and his wisdom to abolishing inequality for African Americans in our country.
But it was yesterday, Jan. 18, that Oprah Winfrey and the cast of Selma took to the streets of Selma, Alabama to pay tribute to Martin Luther King. Oprah was joined by hundreds in her march, including David Oyelowo, the actor who plays MLK in the movie, and Common, who is featured in the film and who also co-created the theme song “Glory” with John Legend.
Oprah said that the moving march was intended to honor, “Martin Luther King as an idea, Selma as an idea and what can happen with strategy, with discipline and with love.”
“Look at what they were able to do with so little, and look at how we now have so much,” she added at the event. “If they could do that, imagine what now can be accomplished with the opportunity through social media and connection, the opportunity through understanding that absolutely we are more alike than we are different.”
