Swimming with sharks, nail art and a trip to the aquarium contribute to the avant-garde challenge — and the competition is tougher than ever before, as the designers send their best looks ever down the runway!
The competition begins at the Long Island Aquarium, where Alyssa Milano tells them to prepare for a voyage under the sea. Alyssa, who served as inspiration for Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, tells the designers to select their own underwater life-form for inspiration for the avant-garde challenge. It is always one of our favorites, but not all the contestants share our excitement!
Project Runway All Stars’ Recap — Avant-Garde Challenge, Season 4 Episode 9:
Heather is already beginning to stress and feel the pressure, because last time around the avant-garde challenge didn’t work out so well for her. Can she redeem herself this time? Only time will tell.
Alyssa tells the designers to start sketching and taking pictures of whatever inspires them. They will have two days for the challenge, as the contestants let out a sigh of relief over the news. The All Stars catch? The budget is only $150 — but Alyssa says she will give them all an extra $100 each if a designer agrees to sketch in the shark tank. Helen steps up and takes one for the team, braving the task — it is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “If I can buy more fabric, I’ll risk my life for that,” Helen says — she’s definitely committed! “I want to show the judges that I’ll take any risk I need to,” she adds.
From the aquarium, they’re off to Mood and then back to the workroom — but it is too early to tell who will excel in the avant-garde challenge. Zanna tells Helen to edit her shark-inspired, ruffle design, and she takes the advice.
What would an avant-garde look be without some out-of-this-world nails to match? Zanna adds another element to the challenge, with Lauren B. Beauty, as she introduces Lauren B. herself — and we can’t wait to see the cool nail art the designers dream up. The winner of the challenge will win a year’s worth of designs and products, a prize valued at $5,000.
After the looks take the runway, Alyssa says the designers really raised the bar this week — it is so nice to see them so impressed. Helen’s critique is first and Isaac Mizrahi pauses to compliment all the designers, saying it is the best runway they have seen all season — and he adds on that he thought she did an amazing job. “I don’t get shark from this dress, but who cares,” he exclaims while looking at Heather’s ruffled frock. Georgina agrees and says she thinks it is beautiful and tells a story. Although she was super nervous, her look paid off — and so did her dive down in the shark tank!
Justin’s coral-inspired ensemble wasn’t well received. While the ideas were great, the execution was slightly sloppy — oh no.
Dmitry’s dress received rave reviews, (and rightfully so!). Isaac is obsessed with the length and Alyssa tells him he came out of his shell, design-wise — and he finally takes home a win! Helen was the runner-up, which as an accomplishment all in itself considering she didn’t think avant-garde was her forte.
The lowest scores belonged to Justin and Fabio — and although the judges say it is one of the closest decisions they have ever had to make, ultimately Justin gets sent home.
All in all, the looks are getting better and the competition is getting tougher — and the avant-garde competition did not disappoint! Do you agree?
