Elvis Presley may have died at the age of 42 in 1977, but his presence remains strong 38 years later. The singer, who became of the face of rock ‘n’ roll music in the ’50s and ’60s, would have been 80 years old on Jan. 8. Elvis Presley’s Birthday: King Of Rock ‘N’ Roll Turns 80
Elvis was a bonafide American phenomenon. He captured the hearts of millions with his swoonworthy rock music and subsequent movies. And let’s not forget those dance moves!
His first single, “Heartbreak Hotel,” was released in 1956 and became an instant hit.
Elvis’ first appearance on the esteemed Ed Sullivan Show in 1956 cemented the singer’s superstardom and heartthrob status. The ladies of America were able to see “Elvis the Pelvis” in action as the singer showed off his epic hip gyrations.
That same year, Elvis made his movie debut in Love Me Tender. He quickly became one of the biggest names in the world. His hit film “Jailhouse Rock” was released in 1957. (Watch a clip here.)
However, in 1958, he was drafted into military service and served until 1960. When he returned, he focused most of his attentions on making movies like Flaming Star, Wild in the Country and Viva Las Vegas.
The rocker was married to Priscilla Presley from 1967 to 1973. They had one daughter together, Lisa Marie Presley. He died on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42 after being found unresponsive on the bathroom floor of his Graceland mansion.
Priscilla spoke on the TODAY show on Jan. 8 to remember her former love. She said it was “hard to believe” that he would have been 80 years old and just goes to show how young he was when he died.
“He still had so much he wanted to do,” she said on the show.
On the day he would have been 80 years old, fans of the singer took to Twitter using the hashtag “#Elvis80.”
