Oh no! George Clooney’s new wife was threatened with arrest in Egypt after exposing flaws in their judicial system, which she believes contributed to the conviction of three al-Jazeera journalists, Amal said in a new interview.
Amal Clooney almost landed herself behind bars in Egypt after exposing flaws in their judicial system. George Clooney‘s wife was actually warned she could be arrested for criticizing the government, Amal revealed in a new interview, but she went ahead with it anyway. Apparently, Amal’s findings were considered highly controversial, as the “flaws” led to the conviction of three al-Jazeera journalists — Peter Greste, Baher Mohamed, and Mohamed Fahmy.
Amal Clooney Threatened With Arrest In Egypt After Representing Jailed Journalists
“When I went to launch the report, first of all they stopped us from doing it in Cairo. They said ‘does the report criticize the army, the judiciary, or the government?’ We said ‘well, yes.’ They said ‘well then, you’re risking arrest,'” Amal told The Guardian after the journalists’ appeal this week, according to the Daily Mail.
The report allegedly suggested Egypt’s judicial system was “insufficiently independent,” according to the Daily Mail.
The report also said, “officials in the ministry of justice have too much power over judges.”
Amal and her team recommended that Egyptian officials no longer be allowed to select judges for particular cases.
“That recommendation wasn’t followed, and we’ve seen the results of that in this particular case where you had a handpicked panel led by a judge who is known for dispensing brutal verdicts,” she told The Guardian.
Last June, Peter, Baher and Mohamed were sentenced to seven and ten years in prison by “controversial” judge Mohamed Nagy Shehata, the Daily Mail claims. He once sentenced 188 people to death in a mass trial.
Journalists File An Appeal
The three men filed a new appeal on Thursday, Jan. 1. Unfortunately, Amal fears that the flaws highlighted in her report will prevent them from getting a fair trial.
Well, at the very least, we’re happy Amal wasn’t arrested. We bet George is glad too.
