The ‘Harry Potter’ family has lost another great actor. David Ryall, who played Elphias Doge in the movie series, died on Christmas Day at the age of 79.
David Ryall, a veteran British actor who was widely known for his role as the wizard Elphias Doge in the Harry Potter films, has died. The actor passed away on Christmas Day. He was only 79, but leaves behind a lasting legacy in film.

The news of David’s death was revealed by Sherlock writer and actor Mark Gatiss. He tweeted, “The great David Ryall left us on Christmas Day. A twinkling, brilliant, wonderful actor I was privileged to call a friend. RIP.”
David was best known in recent years for his role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1. He replaced Peter Cartwright in the role, after Peter passed away in 2013.
David’s character was a Ministry of Magic jurist and friend to Albus Dumbledore.
However, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 wasn’t David’s only contribution to film. He starred in Lytton’s Diary, Goodnight Sweetheart, The Singing Detective and more.
David also had a role in Andrew Davies‘ final two parts of the British House of Cards trilogy — To Play the King and The Final Cut. His last role was Autómata, which featured Antonio Banderas.
He is survived by his three children: Jonathan, Imogen and Charlie Ryall.
