Columbus Short is opening up! On the Dec. 10, episode of ‘Access Hollywood Live’ the former ‘Scandal’ actor admitted that while he was on the show he was, ‘using unhealthy way to kind of self-medicate and deal with a lot of heavy duty stuff in my life.’
It’s no secret that Columbus Short, 32, has not had the best year after a string of legal troubles — including being charged for allegedly attacking and threatening to kill his wife — led to his exit from Scandal. On Dec. 10, he admitted to using “cocaine” while working on the show and that the cast and show creator, Shonda Rhimes knew about his substance abuse saying, “they wanted me to get my stuff together.”
Columbus Short Drug Abuse — Opens Up In New Interview
Columbus is ready to get back to acting after opening up about his substance abuse. The actor opened up to Access Hollywood hosts, Billy Bush and Kit Hoover about his struggle and how his cast helped him through it.
“I’ll be candid. I was struggling with drugs,” the actor admitted. “I had a lot on my plate, and you know, I was using unhealthy ways to kind of self-medicate and deal with a lot of heavy duty stuff in my life.”
When asked what kind of drugs, he answered with cocaine and admitted to drink a lot as well to,”balance a 16-hour work schedule a day, and a family, and, I just lost myself back then.”
Columbus also revealed that the cast knew about his problem and tried to help him. “They protected me and they held me down. And that was one of the real reasons … they just wanted me to get my stuff together,” he revealed. “Sometimes the bottom has to be dropped out for you to really get it. So I moved to Atlanta. I’ve been living there for the last five months, five-and-a-half months, and it’s just been great. It’s been life-changing.”
The actor is now ready to get back to work and would love to be back on Scandal saying, “It’s my family.” Click here to watch the entire interview.
Columbus Short — Fired From ‘Scandal’
After being charged with battery, Columbus was let go from the show. As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, at the time of his exit in April, 2014 Columbus released a statement saying:
“At this time I must confirm my exit from a show I’ve called home for 3 years, with what is the most talented ensemble in television today. Everything must come to an end and unfortunately the time has come for Harrison Wright to exit the canvas. I wish nothing but the best for Shonda, Kerry and the rest of the cast…”
