The Dec. 4 episode of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ featured a Delena road trip (sort of) and Kai’s official return to modern day Mystic Falls.
Jaws dropped and tears were shed on the Dec. 4 episode of The Vampire Diaries. Kai (Christopher Wood) returned to 21st century Mystic Falls with a vengeance, Caroline (Candice Accola) was noticeably absent and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) attempt to save Bonnie (Kat Graham) ended in tragedy.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Recap: Damon = Biggest Steroline Shipper Ever
WARNING: Caroline was not featured in this episode. We know, we know. It’s utter blasphemy.
Alaric (Matt Davis) set the mood nicely for Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) in order to get the Ascendant for Damon. Jo explained that she kept the Ascendant to feel safe. As long as she had it, Kai wasn’t getting out.
Um, about that, Jo.
Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley) were having classic bro time together. Naturally, Damon was teasing Stefan about Caroline and hurting her feelings. Damon is such a #Steroline shipper. Damon told Stefan that he if didn’t confront his feelings, he was bound to have an existensial crisis just like he did back in season two. (FYI: That was Damon’s best scene in the series to date. Nothing has topped that.)
While on a run with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), Elena broke the news about Bonnie. A natural pessimist, Jeremy refused to believe it until he saw Bonnie in the flesh.
Meanwhile, Tyler (Michael Trevino) had basically kidnapped Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and was holding her hostage at the Lockwood Mansion. However, Liv had had enough. Despite the fact that she could die when and if she merged with her brother, Liv wanted to live her life as normally as possible. Girl, I would stay in that frat house as long as possible.
Using Matt (Zach Roerig), Sarah Salvatore wanted to finally have that family reunion with her cousin Stefan. Matt took Sarah to a diner to meet Stefan. However, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) showed up first. He wanted all the details about Matt’s new friend. Before Enzo could get anywhere, Matt told Sarah about Enzo killing Tripp. Stefan showed up before things got too heated.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Recap: Hello Prison World, Old Friend
Damon and Elena had a nice and friendly chat about Steroline. Damon wondered if Elena knew about the whole love situation. Despite what Damon thought, Elena wanted Steroline to be happy if they wanted to be together.
Delena met Liv in the woods with the Ascendant. Liv was curious as to how Damon snagged it from Jo. Damon didn’t have time to explain, so he lied. Liv agreed to send Damon and Elena over to the other side, but they only had a small amount of time. She gave them her blood so they could be linked.
When they reached Prison World, Damon and Elena headed to the 1994 Salvatore house. Elena found blood on a pillow and freaked. Damon tried to page Bonnie for answers. Elena found a recorder with videos of Damon on it. She started watching, but Damon stopped her before things got too deep.
Bonnie responded to the page and called back! Elena and Bonnie shared a sweet moment as they heard each other’s voices for the first time in months. She only had a few hours to get back to Mystic Falls or she would be stuck forever. Bonnie was determined to make it back.
Kai managed to get out of Prison World and donned the hippest trend of the 21st century — skinny jeans. He took a taxi back to Mystic Falls, but when he came time to pay, he couldn’t show the bills. That’s when he strangled the taxi driver with a pair of headphones.
The evil brother headed to the grill and found Liv! Ruh roh.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Recap: Skinny Jeans & Fake IDs
Jo was fifty shades of pissed about Alaric stealing the Ascendant. Poor Alaric had no idea what was going on. She wanted to take him over to Mystic Falls to prove he had been compelled.
Damon finally showed Elena his epic pancake-making skills over in Prison World. This nice breakfast was cut short when Damon revealed to her that he had compelled Alaric to get the Ascendant. Being Elena, she freaked out.
Elena didn’t give Damon one chance to explain. She thought he was only doing this to show how great of a guy he was and make her fall in love with him again.
Go home, Elena. Don’t even start with this nonsense.
Stefan and Sarah sat down for milkshakes. The meeting seemed to be going well, but Stefan knew Sarah’s game. He compelled her to leave the diner and told her that he knew she was lying. Sarah revealed that her real name was Monique and that she took the Salvatore identity when Sarah wanted nothing to do with her past.
Damon had killed Zach’s wife, but baby Sarah had lived. Stefan was determined to keep her safe. Yeah, about that. As Stefan compelled faux-Sarah to leave, Enzo and Matt showed up. Enzo killed her on the spot. Poor Matt. This kid can’t ever catch a break in the love department.
Update on Kai’s 21st century debut: He now had a Twitter account. After showing Liv his ID, that’s when she put two and two together. She tried to escape, by Kai had her trapped. Thankfully, Tyler saved her.
Matt and Enzo finally got to have a little chitchat in which Enzo made his list of complaints. He listed all the reasons why he was not on Team Stefan.
“He hurt the one girl who could possibly do no wrong,” Enzo told Matt regarding Caroline.
That right there is the reason I am shipping Carenzo.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Recap: ‘She Is The Reason I Survived’
For every Bonnie/Damon friendship fan out there, tonight was the night for you. Damon finally revealed to Elena the real reason he came back to Prison World.
“She had hope for the both of us,” Damon told Elena. “She is the reason I survived.”
They became friends during their time together, and he was desperate to save her.
“I’m doing this for Bonnie,” he continued. “Not for you.”
Later, Elena apologized for being the worst girlfriend ever and erasing her memories of Damon. But have no fear, Damon had a perfect answer.
“We’ll make new ones,” he replied. Cue all the feels.
In that moment, Elena felt a change. They were back in modern day Mystic Falls. Liv and Tyler revealed that Kai was back. Bonnie was cheated of her chance to escape.
Kai reintroduced himself to Damon in the woods and showed him just how strong his powers were. Kai destroyed the Ascendant and any known chance of Bonnie escaping.
He also set Elena on fire. What a douche. Damon, using his resources, grabbed a stick and smacked Kai straight the ground.
Matt was understandably upset over Monique’s death. As much as Stefan tried to say he wasn’t like Enzo, Matt didn’t believe him. Matt was D-O-N-E with Enzo and vampires in general. He wanted Jeremy to pick up vampire hunting again and kill Enzo!
Elena had to make the heartbreaking phone call to Jeremy about Bonnie. Elena was there to comfort Damon as he thought about Bonnie. He felt sick over not being able to bring her back. Plus, he was on the outs with Alaric over the whole thing. Bonnie finally made it back to Mystic Falls, only to find everyone gone. She was all alone. Again.
Tyler returned home to find Kai making himself quite cozy. The tide turned and Kai put a broken bottle to his throat. Kai actually wanted to save Liv’s life, not end it. Tyler just had to make a deal with the devil aka Kai.
Should he do it? Yes, he should. Kai is the best villain we’ve had since Klaus. Let’s keep him, please.
HollywoodLifers, what did you think of tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries? Are you sad Bonnie is still stuck in Prison World? How crazy is Kai? Let us know!
