Amid the cries of protesters in New York City, Jon Stewart was rendered speechless over a grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the chokehold death of Eric Garner. The ‘Daily Show’ host weighs in on the verdict in this emotional new video — watch.
Jon Stewart, 52, spoke for a lot of people when he voiced his gut reaction to the verdict that has moved many outraged citizens to the streets: “I don’t know,” Jon said, shaking his head. “I honestly don’t know what to say.” Of course, he expanded on this sentiment in an unusually somber opening on the Dec. 3 episode of The Daily Show. Jon went on to bemoan the grand jury’s decision, saying:
If comedy is tragedy plus time, then I need more fu**ing time. But I would really settle for less tragedy, to be honest with you. I think what is so utterly depressing is that none of the ambiguities that exist in the Ferguson case exist in the Staten Island case. And yet the outcome is exactly the same: no crime, no trial, all harm, no foul… The coroner called it a homicide, the guy isn’t acting threatening, and we know that not through witness testimony from unreliable bystanders but because we are fu**ing watching it. Someone taped it.
The Eric Garner verdict comes on the heels of a Missouri grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown.
“We are definitely not living in a post-racial society,” Jon added. “And I can imagine there are a lot of people wondering how much of a society we’re living in at all.”
