The midseason finale of ‘The Walking Dead’ season five is tonight, so we’ve come up with the 10 most jaw-dropping twists from past seasons. (Trust us, there were some tough calls to make.)
It’s been five insane seasons of The Walking Dead, and the show has no problem rocking our world with shocking twists. From Lori’s death to Zombie Sophia to Carol killing Lizzie, the show knows how to keep fans on their toes. We’ve rounded up the 10 craziest show moments, so prepare yourselves.
‘The Walking Dead’: Carol Kills Lizzie & More Twists
Lori’s death (Season 3)
This one still tugs at our heartstrings. As much as Lori annoyed at times, we weren’t nearly emotionally ready to watch her die, especially with Carl right there. In order to save baby Judith, Maggie and Carl had to deliver the baby via C-section. Lori was willing to give up her life, and the result was one of the most devastating and shocking scenes in Walking Dead history.
Carl killing Shane (Season 2)
Shane’s death was one of the most intense scenes we’ve ever witnessed. After Rick killed him in a bloody battle, Shane returned to life as a Walker. Little Carl had the gun pointed right at his father, but ended up killing Zombie Shane. (We still miss ya, Shane.)
Everyone is infected with the virus
To make matters worse in the zombie apocalypse, everyone is a carrier of the virus. If you die, it’s hello to Zombieland.
Zombie Sophia (Season 2)
The search for Carol’s daughter Sophia took up a major of season two, so learning that she was a zombie the whole time was jaw-dropping. And that was just the beginning. When Sophia finally dragged herself out of the barn, Rick put a bullet in her brain, while Carol watched.
Hershel’s beheading by The Governor (Season 4)
Hershel’s death was absolutely horrific. First, The Governor partially decapitated him while Rick, Maggie, Beth and everyone watched. He attempted to find safety, but The Governor’s wrath was far from over. After a shootout, The Governor finished Hershel off by severing his head. Thankfully, Michonne was there to let Hershel rest in peace. She put down Hershel’s reanimated head.
Carl almost kills Rick (Season 4)
Many of the best scenes on The Walking Dead come from Carl and Rick. Back in season four, Carl was thisclose to killing Rick after believing he had turned. That was some scary stuff.
Cannibals at Terminus (Season 5)
Season five opened up with Rick & Co. attempting their escape from Terminus. They had good reason for wanting to get the hell out — these crazy kooks wanted to eat real people! And they weren’t even zombies! Just when you thought things couldn’t get more insane on The Walking Dead, they go and push non-dead cannibals on us.
Daryl kills Merle (Season 3)
Ugh, Daryl crying is enough to break your heart in half, and then some. Watching Daryl put down his zombie brother Merle before he killed him was just life-shattering. RIP Merle. (Also, Norman Reedus’ cryface is magical.)
Morgan is alive (Season 2)
Not many people make it out alive on The Walking Dead, so when we found out that Morgan was alive all along, it was pretty shocking. Having Morgan return was a great way to bring the show full circle.
Carol kills Lizzie (Season 4)
OK, Lizzie was completely bonkers, but Carol killing her was hands down the most shocking moment of season four. Lizzie had just killed her sister Mika, and Carol knew what had to be done. Before she pulled the trigger, Carol told Lizzie to look at the flowers, which launched a thousand memes.
