Only hours after country singer Ty Herndon, 52, revealed he was gay, “One Voice” country singer Billy Gilman, 26, followed suit. He posted a moving speech on YouTube about his decision to come out. He detailed his recent struggles with record labels who were ashamed of his sexuality and praised Ty for his brave decision.
Billy Gilman Is Gay: Country Singer Comes Out In New Video
Billy admitted that it had taken him “many weeks” to figure how to make this video. However, he finally found the right time and the right way to open up to his fans about being gay.
“Today, actually, a fellow country artist and friend, made it easier to make this video and I wanted my fans who’ve stuck by me for many, many years to know,” Billy said in the video. “I took a long time to grow in country music and it took awhile to grow up.”
Since becoming more open with his sexuality, Billy has encountered scrutiny from the country music industry.
After rumors started swirling, record labels in Nashville turned their ears away from his music. He admitted that record labels didn’t want to have meetings with him. He threw a showcase in Nashville about his new music, and no major record label showed up.
“It’s difficult for me to make this video, not because I’m ashamed of being a gay male artist, or a gay artist, or a gay person,” he continued. “But it’s pretty silly to know that I’m ashamed of doing this knowing that…because I’m in a genre, in an industry that is ashamed of me for being me.”
Billy also teased the music video for his new single “Say You Will.” We can’t wait to see the whole thing!
We applaud Billy for his courageous decision to come out. He is such an inspiration to us all.
