The doll has always been criticized for skewing perceptions of what beauty looks like, and rightfully so! In neither our wildest dreams nor our best hair days will we closely resemble Barbie. But now, an artist has taken it upon himself to make Barbie look a ton more authentic.
A favorite amongst little girls, Barbie has been shaping perfection for over 60 years. And throughout that time, she’s been slated for not representing the average female. Criticism is dying down, though, thanks to a certain socially concerned designer. Artist, Nikolay Lamm, has created an amazing alternative to the traditional doll, Lammily, who comes with stick-on accessories to make her look a little more normal.
The ‘Normal’ Barbie Doll: Tattoos, Cellulite, Acne — The Works
Lammily is supposed to represent an ordinary 19-year-old American teen, and now with these accessories, she’ll look more like one than ever. Eager to show that flaws are beautiful, Nikolay designed a range of stickers that can help the doll look like just about anyone. Glasses, tattoos, stretch marks, scars, zits and so much more are included with the doll starting next year!
Lammily’s Every Girl Doll: Successful So Far
It all started when Nikolay created an image that placed a regular Barbie beside a Barbie that featured standard body proportions, and the results were insane! The photo highlighted the possible body image issues that could stem from the Mattel creation and made Nikolay see the need for a substitute.
Through a huge crowd funding campaign, he was able to manufacture one that proved to be pretty successful! Check out the response from kids right here.
We think it’s great that young girls have a more genuine option to play with, but we want to know what you think about it, Hollywood Lifers! Are the stick-ons TOO realistic for your liking? Let us know!
