Justin is in the middle of a two-week religious retreat to help him cope with the ‘depression and worthlessness’ he’s been feeling since his Selena Gomez split. But an expert tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that the retreat alone won’t save him.
Justin Bieber‘s latest breakup with Selena Gomez, 22, has sent him spiraling into a deep depression, and now he’s turning to his pastor, Carl Lentz, for guidance. But psychologist Steven Orenstein tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that Justin, 20, may actually be in need of serious professional help to get through this difficult time.
Justin Bieber’s Depression Over Selena Gomez: Spiritual Retreat Won’t Cure Him
Justin has been feeling lost and “empty” now that Selena is out of his life, which is all par for the course after a breakup of this level. But a HollywoodLife.com source also revealed that Justin has been experiencing feelings of “worthlessness,” and that’s something that he should take very seriously, Steven Orenstein, MFT, tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.
“We don’t know what is going on with Justin but he could very well be clinically depressed, and feeling worthless and disconnected goes hand in hand with depression,” Steven explains.
“If it’s his breakup that’s causing him this level of pain and he’s not processing it properly or moving through it, then he does need to get professional help because otherwise what happens is you self-medicate with drugs or alcohol,” Steven warns. “When you look at his lifestyle and who he runs with, he is at a very high risk for that.”
Of course, Justin has taken a huge positive step to cope with his depression by going on a two-week religious retreat with his pastor in Rancho Mirage, outside Palm Springs, Calif. But Steven fears that Justin may be in need of a completely different kind of help.
“We don’t know if he’s on this retreat to go into hiding or what, but if he is sick and not getting treatment, it’s not going to get any better,” he says. “Rancho Mirage is only a few doors down from the Betty Ford Center and if he is struggling, that could be a great place for him.”
Justin Bieber Hopes Spiritual Retreat Will Help Win Selena Gomez Back
As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Justin is also hoping that his retreat will help him “win Selena back,” another source told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “He’s convinced that if he fulfills this commitment, Selena will realize how serious he is. And Selena just may take him back.”
Justin may truly believe that getting back together with Selena will cure all of his problems, but it sounds like some of the pain he’s dealing with is pretty deep-rooted. We hope that no matter what happens between him and Selena, he will consider getting the help he needs.
