Aaliyah was allegedly married, secretly and illegally, to R. Kelly in 1994 at the age of 15. Their controversial romance has remained one of the biggest mysteries of the superstar’s short life, and the truth behind the relationship will finally be revealed in ‘Aaliyah: The Princess Of R&B.’
‘Aaliyah: The Princess Of R&B’ — Alexandra Shipp Takes On The Late Superstar
Alexandra was only a young girl when Aaliyah was tragically killed in a plane crash on August 25, 2001, but the actress tells HollywoodLife.com that the biopic project spoke to her because she’s a “huge, huge fan.”
“Aaliyah kind of redefined a lot of things for young girls,” Alexandra says. “Especially being a tomboy and being the only girl in my family, she made it okay to be different.”
Alexandra admired Aaliyah and admits that taking on the icon was surreal — especially because she looks so much like her in the flick. “It was kind of scary looking in the mirror, at times, or watching the scene back.”
Aaliyah’s Romance With R. Kelly Will Be Revealed
The movie will focus on Aaliyah’s rise to superstardom, but dives much deeper than her career. Finally, viewers will see what went down with R. Kelly, as it’s been widely reported that the couple secretly wed and then annulled their marriage, though they both denied those allegations.
“You kind of have to because he was such a monumental part in her career and the takeoff of her career,” Alexandra tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively about including the singer’s relationship with R. Kelly on screen. “This is a story about her life…but that being said, it’s Lifetime so there’s not going to be any sort of crazy sex scenes or anything like that. It has to be respectful.”
