It was another cutthroat week for the ‘All Stars’ designers. After being given the dreaded ‘Unconventional Challenge’ the designers worked quickly to put together pieces that would wow the judges, however, two people seemed to have the same idea — which, of course, caused some drama! Which two designers were making passive aggressive remarks in the workroom? Find out here!
For the second week in the competition, the designers met with host Alyssa Milano at the Skylight at Maynihan Station in NYC were they were given the ‘Unconventional Challenge.’ Every season this challenge give the designers an opportunity to turn simple materials into something extraordinary. While some designers received huge praise on the runway, others did not live up to their ‘All Star’ potential and were sent home.
‘Project Runway All Stars’ Recap — Unconventional Challenge:
The designers meet with Alyssa in a space that is used for many shows during fashion week. The venue was under construction and that is where the designers stepped in. This week, they were given the ‘Unconventional Challenge’ where they were to turn masculine materials on a construction site into feminine fashion pieces. Many of the designers had flashbacks to past seasons where they had to do the same exact challenge — and some memories were prettier than others. Alyssa told the designers that anything in the construction space was fair game and that they would be given 15 minutes to collect their material and one day to bring their creation to life.
Back in the workroom the designers quickly pulled together materials and began to pull designs together. Once they started creating, Chris noticed that Dmitry‘s bungie cord design looks a lot like his. Dmitry “allegedly” scrapped his original idea and he “allegedly” took Chris’ idea and tried to sell it as his own. In response to Chris’ comments of technically taking an idea, all Dmitry had to say was: “He’s just mad because my piece looks better than his.” Woah there, Dmitry. Let’s not get full of ourselves.
Throwing Shade In The Work Room:
Dmitry got a rude awakening when Zanna Roberts Rossi stepped in to critique the designer’s work. Zanna told the designers that she wants to see these materials completely transformed and to be extremely fashion-forward and ready for the runway. She first stopped at Chris’ station where she told him to not make his bungie cord dress look like a lot of rope thrown together. Chris took her critique seriously and started to change up his design.
When she reached Dmitry, however, she was ready to call BS on his look. She told him to look around the room and make sure his design is different than everyone else’s, (AKA this looks exactly like Chris’ dress and there is clearly a story behind that). Dmitry got extremely defensive and told her that a lot of people are using the same material. Zanna fired back and told him while that may be true, in that moment in time his and Chris’ designs looked the most similar.
Zanna left critiques with other designers, such as telling Michelle that her look is more sporty than feminine. And for Alexandria’s complex design, Zanna told her it was a little goth and too spooky. Alexandria followed up with: “just because it is black doesn’t mean it is goth.” While that may be true, her look did look a little spooky and Alexandria didn’t really seem to care about Zanna’s comments.
The one design that everyone in the workroom had their eyes on was Justin’s zip-tie dress. He used white plastic mesh as the main pieces and then continued to put on white and black zip-ties onto the mesh. The effect of the two colors on top of how the dress looked and moved on the model made everyone jealous. He was definitely the designer to beat in this competition!
Judges ‘Expect More’ On The Runway:
24 hours flew by as the designers found themselves taking their seats for the runway show. This week the guest judges consisted of reality stars Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi, Jenny (JWOW) Farley and fashion designer Elie Tahari.
Michelle came into this competition already winning Project Runway, but this was the second week in a row she found herself in the bottom two. The judges told her that she played it too safe and that she really needs to up her game. Judge Isaac Mizrahi labeled Justin’s dress as perfection and Alyssa praised him for being a “smart designer/.” As for Alexandria’s ‘spooky’ design, Issac told her that it was upsetting and not at all beautiful. Her dress seemed too outdated and looked more like a costume than something a young woman would wear. Chris also found himself in the bottom and he expressed to the judges that he did not have the time that he wanted because he decided to switch his design after seeing other designers start to do the same thing. Judge Georgina Chapman gave him the great advice of not to focus on what the other designers are doing, but what he wants to do.
When it all came down to it, Justin was the winner of this competition. It was a sweet moment for Justin because this is the first challenge he has ever won on the show. While he did fairly well on his season of Project Runway, he never actually won a challenge. Sadly, it came down to Michelle and Alexandria to go home and someone’s design just wasn’t good enough to keep them another week. In this case, Alexandria was sent home but she had no hard feelings or sadness about it. She feels that she can do great things but creating unconventional designs is just not one of them.
What do you think? Did the right designer go home?
