In the film, Jake plays a petty criminal who films accident victims as they are taken away in ambulances. Jake decided to drop 30 pounds to truly get into the role. This meant getting down to 150 pounds from his normal and healthy 180-pound frame.

“I knew that [Lou] was literally and figuratively hungry,” Jake told Variety about his character.

“I would try to eat as few calories as possible,” Jake continued. “I knew if I was hungry that I was in the right spot. Physically, it showed itself, but chemically and mentally, I think it was even a more fascinating journey. It became a struggle for me.”

He revealed that he would sometimes only eat small portions of meat or crackers, but sometimes not at all. He would also run 15 miles from his house to the set.

The normally hunky actor looked unrecognizable when photos surfaced of him filming.

Jake falls in the ranks of other actors who’ve gone to extremes for a role. Christian Bale dropped 60 pounds for his role in The Machinist. Matthew McConaughey lost nearly 40 pounds for his Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Nightcrawler is now in theaters.
