If you though the drama on ‘Project Runway’ was high last season, you are in for a real treat during this season of ‘Project Runway All Stars.’ All of your favorite designers are back for another chance at the ‘Runway’ title while also getting their digs in whenever they can. So, which designers returned to the runway?
This season of Project Runway All Stars was dubbed “The Hunger Games Of Fashion,” according to season 12 runner-up Alexandria, (who was the first designer to arrive at New York City’s Grand Central station). There she met up with other designers from past seasons — and lets just say some welcomes were warmer than others. Once all the designers arrived, host Alyssa Milano met up with them to tell them about what their first challenge would be.
‘Project Runway All Stars’ Premiere Recap Season 14, Episode 1:
Who doesn’t love familiar faces? The returning designers for this season are Chris from season 4, Jay from season 7, Gunner, Sonjia and Fabio from season 10, Patricia, Benjamin and Kate from season 11, and, finally Justin, Helen, Samantha and Alexadria from season 12. Alyssa told the designers that since this is All Stars the designers need to expect the unexpected. In this case the unexpected is bringing in two past winners to add some serious height to the competition. Season 10 winner Dmitry and season 11 winner joined the designers — and they were not too pleased to hear about the new additions.
Seeing that these designers have been through this process before, there is no immunity in this competition. For the first challenge it was the classic boys vs girls. They were divided up to produce a collection that was inspired by New York City’s uptown or downtown scene. Each of the designers were responsible for their own designs and were going to be judged individually. The winner of the competition would come from the winning collection and the person who would be sent home would be from the losing team. In a coin toss the men picked downtown while the women were given uptown. Each collection had a $1,500 budget that was to be split among the designers. The designers were given one day to complete this challenge. Seeing as though they have all been through this process before it seemed as though this was going to be a piece of cake for them…but guess again!
The designers took to their respective city locations to sketch and draw inspiration for their designs. Then they returned to their old Mood stomping grounds where they were given 30 minutes to collect their fabric. After a quick trip to Mood, the designers were introduced to their brand new workroom. After getting acquainted with their new space, the teams unloaded their bags and Fabio found that the fabric that he chos for his design didn’t make it in the bag. He quickly began to scramble to find leftover fabric to create a new design. There are no second chances in All Stars — and Fabio knew that he had to get it together and work fast.
First Critiques Of The Season:
This season, Senior Fashion Editor of Marie Claire, Zanna Roberts Rossi, will serve as a mentor to the designers. Zanna knows all types of fashion and she has no problem being honest with the designers about what needs to change in their designs. For the first critique, she tells Patricia that her look is too bohemian for an uptown girl. The claws come out when Gunner said that her dress “looks like a bloated circus tent.” She then told Kate that her dress was too modern and the entire style needed to be changed. As for the boys, Zanna told Benjamin that his dress looked too uptown and she openly hated Gunner’s design.
By the end of the day a few designers were running around the workroom trying to finish the last of their work. Chris continued to be catty by saying: “If you are surprised that its the end of the day and you aren’t finished, you’re kinda screwed!”
The day of the first runway show arrived and the designers were given two hours to finish up their looks. For Kate, this is her third round in this competition — and the nerves still run through her. Kate was previously on seasons 11 and 12 of Project Runway. While Kate was attempting to get her nerves under control, the rest of her competition was pulling everyone else’s pieces apart. While the men all agreed that none of the women’s looks seemed cohesive, Michelle described the men’s creations as being: “cheap tweenage styles.”
Downtown Is The Way To Go:
The designers were greeted again by Alyssa on the runway where they were told what their overall prize would be if they win this competition. The winning designer would get a spread in Marie Claire, along with a position as contributing Fashion Editor for a year. They would also receive a trip from Chi hair care, hair by Chi and makeup by Mary Kay for a year of fashion shoes, a Brother’s sewing studio and $150,000 cash prize. If the designers weren’t hungry to win, they definitely were once they heard the ultimate prize!
They were then introduced to the judges for this season, fashion designers Georgina Chapman and Isaac Mizrahi. This week’s guest judge was Ivanka Trump. All four judges watched the entire runway show and chose the winning team based off of the most accessible collection, which happened to be the men’s downtown collection. While all of the men were safe after winning the competition Chris, Benjamin, and Fabio were the top three on the runway while Michelle, Kate and Patricia were in the bottom three for the women’s collection.
Isaac told Kate that she designed her dress too tight and Alyssa told her that she had too many ideas that just didn’t work out in the final design. For Michelle, she was critiqued on the fact that she had different colors in her all-suede dress and that it should have been just one solid color. As for Patricia, the judges didn’t like the overall design, color, and fabric of the dress.
Remember when Fabio didn’t have any of his fabric and had to completely redesign his entire look with whatever fabric he could find in the workroom? Well, that little dilemma paid off for him because his two-toned jumpsuit received rave reviews by the judges. Alyssa told him that she: “Needs that on my body. Right now.” Chris’ kilt skirt with a corset was put down by Ivanka because she felt that the vibe was very cliche for a downtown look. Zanna told Benjamin that his dress was too uptown but the judges seemed to differ. Isaac praised Benjamin for the symmetry of his dress and said it looked really free and easy to wear.
There could only be one winner of this challenge — and that title went to Fabio! All that stress and the fabric not being picked up truly paid off for him. Sadly, Patricia was sent home for her design. Even though she, (and everyone else!), was sad to see her go, she was still extremely grateful for the opportunity to come back — but her design just wasn’t enough to keep her around.
What do you think? Are you excited to see all the drama unfold on this season?
