It is the moment we have all been waiting for all season — the final runway show! Which designers brought their A game for their final walk and which one’s missed the mark? More importantly, who won the entire competition? WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
When we last saw the designers they had just received their final critiques from the judges. While Char, Amanda and Sean only had a few notes from the judges, Kini was told to scrap his entire collection and start over. It was only two days until the final runway show and Kini was starting to panic! Was he able to do an overhaul with his collection and create a brand new collection in that amount of time? More importantly, was there enough time to WOW the judges? Read on — but only if you’re ready to find out who took home the big prize and was crowned the winner of Season 13!
‘Project Runway’ Winner Sean Kelly, Season 13 Finale – The Final Walk, Recap:
While Kini went straight to work to try and redesign his entire collection in just 48 hours, the other designers also stepped back into the workroom to make some last minute changes. Sean received some strong opinions about his fringe collection and he decided that his entire collection can not have fringe. Instead, he scrapped one of his dresses and decided to create a brand new dress. Char also decided to create some new pieces. She scrapped two dresses and instead decided to create a brand new dress with a hoodie to give her collection a more sporty look. Amanda decided not to scrap anything or create a new design. Instead, she focused on polishing off a few of her pieces and to elevate a few of her designs even more. Tim Gunn gave the designers a chance to go to Mood and get some extra fabric with the budget of $300 dollars. All of them jumped on that chance expect Amanda. The girl had a vision and she didn’t want to get distracted by going to Mood.
Final Workroom Evaluation:
After a quick trip to Mood, Kini automatically felt a boost of confidence. He was able to pick up new fabric, (mostly chiffon), and began to focus on creating a sexier collection.
Just like every week, Tim came to the workroom for a final evaluation. It was here where Amanda told him that she cut up one of her dresses in her collection and created a “sophisticated” tunic top and skirt. Amanda, however, began to over think and doubt some of her pieces, but Tim quickly put her at ease and told her that she is in good shape and to believe in her designs.
Kini explained to Tim that he was going to add shorts and leggings to his collection to make it more youthful. Tim agreed with him and told Kini that if anyone could overhaul a collection in a short amount of time, it would be him. Sew on, Kini!
After taking out one his fringe dresses, Sean told Tim that he decided to create a flowly orange dress in order to eliminate the amount of fringe in the collection. The dress would be one of the final pieces in the show, seeing as it represents the betrayal of Caesar. Tim applauded Sean — but when he moved onto Char it was a completely different situation.
Throughout this season we have seen Char go through many obstacles. Many designers, (Sean especially!), have no idea how she made it this far in the competition. It is just assumed that Char has a ridiculous amount of luck. Char never has a set vision when designing her clothes and it was evident in her final collection. Char explained to Tim that she created a long dress with a hoodie, but Tim reminded her that she can’t be too ambitious this late in the game. Char scrapped two dresses, (one of them being a teal dress that Tim hated). She also explained to him that she wanted to add four new looks to her collection. The only problem is the girl can’t sew that fast! Did she finish it all in time?
Fashion Week — The Final 4 Designers Take On Lincoln Center:
All of the designers were feeling confident in their designs in the hours leading up to the final runway show. Kini felt that his collection looked 10 years younger and it restored his belief that he could win this competition. During their final moments in the work room, Tim came in and delivered a heartfelt message to the designers, saying they are: “the most talented designers I’ve ever worked with. This is truly anyone’s game.” The speech Tim gave closed a chapter for the designers and opened a new one. They were no longer going to be no-named designers working in a workroom. They were about to make their fashion debut on fashion’s biggest stage…and it was leaving everyone with a nervous and excited feeling.
The morning of the final runway show had the designers up at 3:30 AM as they were quickly whisked away to Lincoln Center. The designers were shown the runway where all their blood, sweat and tears would walk. It all became a very “surreal” feeling to all of them — and quite overwhelming, however, they could not afford to have their feelings overpower the work that still needed to be done!
Amanda summed up the energy backstage before the show perfectly, saying it was “terrifying, frantic and crazy.” While the designers were doing the last minute touches with hair and makeup on their models, Char was changing her looks last minute. No, not last minute makeup, but pulling completed pieces and swapping them out on different models. Remember the teal dress that Tim hated and didn’t want to show? Well, Char decided that she wanted it to walk. Tim told her that this is her show and if she wanted that dress to show than she should do just that.
Amanda’s boho collection was the first to walk, followed by Char’s fun and girly collection. Kini’s brand new collection was third and Sean’s collection was the grand finale. Each of the designers stood by Tim backstage and watched their creations walk, whil e Heidi Klum, Zac Posen, Nina Garcia and guest judge Emmy Rossum judged from the front row.
And The Winner of Project Runway Season 13 Is…
Once the show was over, the designers returned to the runway where Heidi told them that it was: “the best fashion showcase we have ever had on this show.” With that in mind, the designers were more than ready to hear the judges critiques. Char was the first one to receive notes from the judges. Zac told her that there is a market for the fun and flirty girl that Char created, but that she still needs to up her fashion game and delve further into her creativity. Nina told her that she really understands her prints and colors and how they work together, but she felt as though Char was trying too hard to be someone that she’s not.
Nina summed up Amanda’s collection as simply “effortless.” Zac loved the jewelry that she had created and told her that her collection was the most original on the runway. Heidi praised her for her one long and flowing dress that took the runway and Emmy knew exactly the voice that Amanda had in her designs.
Sean was told that he had the most editorial and polished collection. Even though that he had the most finished and exact collection, Nina flat out told him that he could have done better. Emmy praised him on his amazing storytelling that he showed through his collection and Zac complimented him on his chic, sexy, and edgy designs. All of the judges praised him for his closing number of a complete orange fringe dress that absolutely WOWED on the runway.
Kini was already feeling the pressure because the judges hated his first collection. Now, they were able to see what he put together in just a few days — and while they loved it, they gave him some criticism. Nina told him that he tries too hard with trying to incorporate so many ideas in one design. Zac reminded Kini that less is more, but that he still created an amazing collection in such a short amount of time. Kini also received praise for how he incorporated denim in the collection. Kini truly has a gift when it comes to denim, and the judges were pleased with those pieces on the runway.
After the designers left the runway, the judges came together to discuss who the winner would be. Heidi reminded them that “not one designer’s collection was perfect from beginning to end.” Each of them had high and low moments as well as room for improvement. When it came down to it, it was who was going to create a brand and a new voice for the world of fashion…so who came out on top and won the entire competition?
The winner was named and it was Sean Kelly — and we couldn’t be happier for him! After a season full of stunning designs and a fair share of drama, Sean was the one who took home the prize.
Do you agree with the results of the competition?
