So many stylish stars turned to Oscar de la Renta when they wanted to make a statement on the red carpet. Take a look back at some of his most memorable looks as we celebrate his legacy.
Not many designers can say they had the honor of dressing both Nancy Reagan and Rihanna in their lifetime — but Oscar de la Renta did. From first ladies to a-list celebs, Oscar was the go-to designer for so many of fashion’s elite — and he will be truly missed. Although he passed away at 82 on Oct. 20 after a long battle with cancer, his legacy will live on. Here at HollywoodLife, we’re celebrating the mark he left on the fashion world, (and history), by taking a look back at some of his most stunning creations.
Oscar de la Renta Celebrity Dresses — Celebrity Clients & Celebrities He Dressed:
One of his most memorable moments came mere weeks before his death, when international human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin wed actor George Clooney in a stunning bespoke creation by the designer, which was also featured in the November 2014 issue of Vogue, in a beautiful image that featured the bride-to-be at her fitting alongside the iconic designer in his NYC atelier.
The designer’s ability to create breathtaking gowns really stole the spotlight at the 2014 Met Gala when he dressed everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to Taylor Swift. While Taylor often relied on the designer for her major red carpet moments, SJP and Oscar de la Renta were extremely close — in fact, who could forget that an entire episode of Sex and the City focused on that red Oscar dress Carrie wore for her “Date With the Russian,” (followed by a waltz in McDonald’s).
Along with the celeb set, Oscar was favored by many powerful women in politics, including Hillary Clinton, who was very close to the designer and relied on him to create her stunning dress for her husband’s second inauguration.
Not many designers are equally as favored by both the political and the celebrity set, but Oscar’s stunning, feminine gowns and beautiful dresses were universally chic. From Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to Sandra Bullock, take a look back at some of his biggest moments.
